HUGE gap with Houston

“Huge” gap exists between Chiefs, Justin Houston
Posted by Mike Florio on August 5, 2014, 4:28 PM EDT
Houston AP

Linebacker Justin Houston was sufficiently upset with the lack of a new contract to skip the offseason program. But he showed up for training camp, realizing that the best way to get paid is to complete the final year of his rookie deal.

The Chiefs rewarded Houston for honoring his current obligations by offering a new contract. Houston didn’t like it. Per a league source, a “huge” gap current exists between the team’s offer and Houston’s demands.

It’s unclear whether that gap will be closed before the season ends and the Chiefs have to decide whether to use the franchise tag. If they don’t work out new deals with Houston and Alex Smith, they’ll have to choose between them. Maybe the Chiefs will choose neither.

The team’s ultimate position on Houston will depend on the development of rookie Dee Ford. Currently, Ford is listed as the second-string right outside linebacker, behind Tamba Hali.

I just like to be objective and I don't know why you call me Bob.

I'm talking about the Geno thread. The Joeckel vs. Fisher thread. The Bray nutsucking thread. I'm just calling it like I see it. This place is full of suckers investing in false hope. When you post something objective and real you get killed for it.

Hey- it's all in good fun though man.

I have no problem with looking at the future and discussing how things should be done. I guess the only thing I really question is why people hang on to things that didn't go their way for so long? I can see the occasional, "I was right about that guy" post but, threads that go on for years? It's pretty pathetic.

Guess which side he rushed from the majority of the time last season.
Since it got skipped over, I'll answer my own question.

Mario Williams rushed from the left (offense's right) 63% of the time in 2013. Obviously no one would give him a big contract.

If it's me doing this I'd pay Houston first - top pass rusher's, in thei prime, are hard to find. Much harder than FA QB's.

It's likely that the Chiefs will be getting a top 10 pick and maybe even top 5 next year. It's supposed to be a draft with good QB prospects. If Smith won't sign a decent deal, then tag him (he'll bank for a year) and release him afterwards. Regardless, draft a QB prospect in round 1. Let him sit a year, release Smith after tag is up, and roll with the young guy.

I'm a Smith fan, but he'll be on the wrong side of 30 and has just been turned into a more of a stop gap QB than he was last season, because the Chiefs have clearly taken a step backwards. So, I'd let the team grow around the YOUNG QB + YOUNG pass rusher rather than with a QB with a shelf life of 3-4 years...Just my opinion.

You're saying Houston is like the 6th best guy at his position, so he should get paid accordingly. Alex is demanding a top 5 contract among QBs, but he's really a top 15-20 QB. Hell, I'll even extend it to the 12-17 range for you because you're such a homer. The standard for Alex is to just give him a shit ton of cash that he doesn't deserve (which is AT LEAST around $20 million total).

If we overpay Houston, what's that figure going to be? Not ****ing $20 million I can ****ing guarantee that.
Who the **** said I wanted to pay Alex like a top five QB? I'm just explaining why Alex will get paid before Houston and why the Chiefs will wait on Houston. People are flipping the **** out because I laid out the reality of why it will go down this way.

Alex is going to get his cash and they'll wait on Houston because they don't think he deserves to be paid what he wants yet.

You can take that to the bank.

You said if you were Dorsey you would offer him the 6th highest OLB contract because that's what he's worth.

Ummmm...

You do realize that the Chiefs don't think Alex is worth as much as he's wanting, right?

They've had multiple discussions and they are about as close to extending Alex as they are Houston, but come next year, guess which one will get the tag.

Not really, there are tons of them. Last year it was Abraham. This year it will be Peppers. They don't have to be in their primes. Especially since DEs are becoming interchangeable as 3-4 OLBs.

Finding a QB who wins and has started for ten seasons is really hard to find. They usually go hand in hand.

That said, if I were doing it, I would wait to pay both of them until the end of the season.

If he puts up 60% of his stats against crappy talent that's what I would offer him. You are taking that out of context. Read the post I quoted.

Second, let me spell this out very clearly for you guys.

Quarterbacks get paid for wins. It is that basic. It's why Cassel got a contract here. it's why Andy Dalton got a contract in Cincy. I could go on.

3-4 OLBers get paid for sacks and pressuring the quarterback. They don't get paid for wins. they don't get paid for stopping the run. They don't get paid for pass coverage. They get paid for beating the other teams best o-linemen and smashing the QB.

NFL Hierarchy

1. QB
2. LT
3. Pass Rusher
4. Shutdown CB

There is a different standard for quarterbacks than there is for OLBs. QBs are at the top of the food chain. Why don't you see this?
cassel didn't win here prior to getting paid
