Talking Draft Prospects

We've got perhaps the biggest, most consequential draft coming up for this franchise since 2008. The Chiefs have all seven of their picks, and will certainly be picking up an additional four in compensatory picks, one of which is assuredly a 3rd rounder.

As a result, it's important to familiarize ourselves with as much of this draft class as possible. I started a thread last offseason that discussed late rounders that was generally well liked and spurred tons of great conversation on all sorts of draft picks we normally wouldn't talk about, so I'm going to duplicate that idea this year, only discussing all talents, rather than just the mid- and lower-round ones.

The OP will be continually updated to show the talent I'm reviewing by position. Keep in mind as I list these players that I am generally listing their round projections, but it is not a strict big board, as I likely won't have a big board put together until May.

Spoiler!

How much of a chance do you guys think there is of the Chiefs taking Maxx Williams in the the 1st, surely he will be rising on boards in the coming months...looks to be the best TE in this draft

You know Alex and Andy would salivate over an elite TE duo like Kelce/Mad Maxx.

He is most definitely an impact player. When he gets a free run at the RB he is deadly. But he hasn't shown the ability to play in the 3-4. In the 4 games i watched he didn't stack and shed properly a single time, he runs around blockers, and the few times the lineman did get their hands on him they annihilated him. If sutton could come up with a design that gave him a free run at the Rb(which he can), he'd be perfectly fine, but in our current defense he'd be a liability. He's on the absolute ragged edge as far as size goes for a 3-4 ilb. he'd probably be the smallest one in the entire NFL. I try not to get too caught up with size, but it's pretty clear he isnt an overly strong guy, and he struggles to get off the blocks of college caliber offensive lineman. He would require some thinking in order to maximize his effectiveness, an extra dt, a TED linebacker to take on blockers etc. I'm not sure he's that caliber of player to warrant that kind of scheming.

I agree that dawson is a much better player than jmj or mauga, but those guys are massive compared to dawson. I kind of see the difference between a 4-3 olb and a 3-4 ilb, as being similar to the difference between a 5 tech and a DT. Some guys can play both, but some cant. Allen Bailey is a quality 5 tech, but he'd get absolutely pummeled as a 3tech or shade, and would be worse than even the bottom of the barrel DT's in the league. I see dawson the same way.

@ o. city I really think we just need guys to make the proper reads, actually get off blocks, and make tackles. And i'm not so sure you can teach a guy to not get pummeled by an offensive lineman, which is what it looks like will happen to dawson, if an nfl lineman got his hands on him right now. .

I'm actually watching a lot of Maxx right now.

I'm not quite sure about this, but I think Williams is a huge project with Pro Bowler upside. I've got a review of him coming up today, no lie...

That said, I seriously doubt the Chiefs draft him in the first for several reasons:

1. It's way too early, but he may not go in the first.

2. The Chiefs will likely keep Fasano, much to our dismay.

3. He may be listed at 250+, but he's slender and looks about 240. Which plays into my next reason.

4. He's not the kind of TE Dorsey likes -- he's a Graham-type, not a Gronkowski-type.

But after that, we've got to address ILB, S, WR.

I think I'd still take Prewitt in the second and then Terrance Plummer, ILB Central Florida later in the draft. Plummer plays a similar position for the Knights and, like Dawson, makes a ton of impact plays.

I just don't think that there is a guy like Prewitt in this draft and he's excelled at the single high safety role for the Rebels his whole career.

Direckshun, watch Plummer and see if you don't see the same type of player that Dawson is:

Now plummer, i love. that guy takes tackles head on with no problem at all.

Thanks for the reply, Direkshun. What do you think if he fell to KC in the 2nd? I can't even imagine the havoc a Kelce/Maxx duo could wreak on the NFL in Reid's system.

What do you think of Matt Miller? Is he someone the Chiefs might take in the later rounds?

This TE class is pathetic, though. It's very possible he gets overdrafted.

Not by us, though.

I honestly don't think the Chiefs take either player. They're not Dorsey's "type."

Dorsey likes speed, speed, speed at WR, and glorified Heath Millers at TE.

Was thinking this as well... but I thought the same thing of Navarro Bowman as a prospect...

If they don't make a play for Vernon Davis, I wouldn't mind them selecting Ben Koyack from ND in rd 3-4. He was shamefully underutilized in the ND pass game, but dude can play.

The scoop: Miami's Clive Walford and Ben Koyack of Notre Dame are "head and shoulders" ahead of this year's crop of senior tight ends, but some evaluators are beginning to favor Walford. "Walford's knee injury doesn't bother me; he got in good shape this year and was just more confident in himself, which helped him cut down on the drops," said an NFC director of college scouting. "He's a way tougher player than Koyack."

As I see the TE position in this draft, as Direckshun said, it's pretty lean. There aren't a lot of guys who really stand out this year.

For what the Chiefs do and with having Kelce, I think that Ohio State's Jeff Heuerman would be a terrific option. Heuerman is a terrific athlete who is an A+ blocker. His blocking is so good that Meyer has basically held him in on the strong side all season long versus utilize his athleticism down field.

If you are looking for a potential replacement for Fasano or Harris, I think you want a guy who does offer the downfield capabilities, but who, first and foremost, is capable of effectively blocking at the NFL level.

IMO, Heuerman is the best TE in this draft for what the Chiefs need and want to augment Kelce at the position.

Quote:
Heuerman was injured on the Buckeyes' first play against Alabama. He got downfield to block on an Ezekiel Elliott run and got rolled up from behind by Crimson Tide defensive lineman Jarran Reed.

He played through the pain for most of the win over the Tide, but was walking with a noticeable limp afterward. Last Tuesday, Buckeyes coach Urban Meyer said Heuerman was "probable" for Oregon.

It seems that may have been upgraded a bit.

"He'll play and play well," tight ends coach Tim Hinton told cleveland.com. "It would take a lot more than what he has to keep him off the field."
And he hangs out in strip clubs with porn stars (Lisa Ann). He's already adopted the mannerisms of the modern day NFL tight end:

The Chiefs already have a pretty stout line in front of the backers and with Sutton running sub-packages all the time, we're pretty much running a version of the 4-2-5 anyway with Houston and Hali as the two front guys after Poe and Bailey. I know what you are saying jonzie about a traditional 34 alignment, but considering what Sutton put out on the field in 2014, I think Dawson would really play well in this scheme.

Shit! Prewitt or Dawson...

shit, shit, shit, shit...
I'd take Dawson in the second, passing on Prewitt who will probably go earlier than our pick anyways, and take someone like Tartt in the 3rd instead for the safety position. But then again, Tartt might go in the 2nd round as well, especially if he times like everyone is expecting him to (4.4s).

The same thing was said of Patrick Willis. Prior to the 49ers drafting him, Mike Singletary thought that he was no good, saying that Willis was too small and not physical enough to get off of blocks. We all know how Willis turned out.
