The thing that scares me about Borderlands is the RPG aspect. I'm not a fan of those type of games. Maybe because I'm really unfamiliar with them. I imagine I will end up buying it at some point.

It has just as much RPG elements as MW2. You get experience for kills and objectives that let you unlock new perks. Instead of unlocking new guns, you pick them up from dead enemies. RPG's aren't that scary or unfamiliar, brah.

Maybe to you. I'm the type of guy who had no interest in FF.

I didn't have an interest in that either. My point is that MW2 has just as much RPG to it as Borderlands. Just trying to make it easier for you to see what the game entails.
On a different note, what is it about RPGs that makes you not want to play them? You're missing out a lot by not playing games like Mass Effect 1/2 for example.

My interpretation of an RPG must be a narrow one. When I think of an RPG I think of FF. More strategy, skills and potions I've never heard of. I don't have patience for stuff like that. As you probably know I'm a big fan of run n gun FPS. Where some strategy is involved. I just don't see a lot of RPG in MW2. But I know what you're saying. I just guess I have a misinterpretation of what an RPG really is.

Borderlands isn't an RPG. Period. It's an FPS first and foremost. It differentiates itself from traditional FPS's in that it has more of an open world, and depending on the character you choose, your gameplay will be much different than another character.
Give it a shot - it's nothing like Final Fantasy. |

Sorry for appearing so dense re: RPGs. I just must have a clear misinterpretation about what they really are. If it's more FPS than RPG I'm sure I will enjoy it. On the other hand, I've heard Fallout 3 was more so a RPG then anything else. I just bought it because it was $20, lol.

To me an RPG is a game where your character improves by leveling up as the story progresses. It used to be very clear cut, but developers have figured out that the character improving formula keeps the gamers playing the game for longer and enjoying it more in the process (by providing a reward system for advancing through the story). So, now, you can see that shit in FPS, sports, adventure and strategy games. Some games, definitely have more/heavier RPG elements than others and there are true RPG games where you actually ROLE PLAY and I think that's the games Ceej is referring to. Borderlands is definitely not one of those games. Borderlands is pretty much a watered down FPS version of Diablo with less loot options and a shitty story.

The whole RPG mantra seems too vast for me. You make good points Metro. I just don't want a boring, bland game. Like, the "battle" sequences in the old FF games. Like, the standstill potion, dodge battles. I'm also aware on the RPG progression. To be 100% honest I've not played Fallout 3 because I'm scared it won't interest me at all because I've heard it was an RPG type game.

well play Fallout 3 -- JRPGs, like FF, are in a different league.

Yeah, I stay THE **** away from JRPGs. They're just too weird for me.
And Ceej, **** Fallout 3, play Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2 instead.

Another game I could never get into was WoW. Isn't that also somewhat of an RPG?
Metro, I've got other games I would rather purchase before those two. RDR, and Borderlands. If I purchase Borderlands would anyone be interested in co-oping? |
