I get the feeling that Ben Solo was very powerful with the force, and Uncle Luke was helping him harness his connection to the Force in unconventional ways as to what we've become used to seeing. Training him to be a seer instead of a warrior.

Interesting theory. Dovetails with an idea I had that Snoke is actually dead in the Obi-Wan Kenobi walking around as a spirit (instead of being a hologram).

I get the feeling that JJ Abrams said, "Man, it would be freaking sweet if we have him freeze blaster rays! Let's do it!"

Maybe I'm not giving the creators and such enough credit, but it seems like (and I know it's part of the fun) we create all kinds of contorted explanations and theories based on things we see in the movies that may have just been done on a whim.

You should definitely do that.

But I also think you'll enjoy the movie. Get the head beforehand, just in case.

I saw this movie yesterday, amazingly without having had anything spoiled. I read through a lot of this thread today, and found myself nodding in agreement with both sides of the it sucked/ it was awesome debate.

The casting and acting were great. I like the new characters for the most part. I think Daisy What'shername is fantastic. The VFX and the whole look and feel of the movie was great.

The plot was ... familiar? Holy shit. The Deathstar 3.0 was a little cringe inducing. Darth Douchebag was a bit inconsistent in his mastery of the force, bowcaster bolt not withstanding.

I enjoyed it, but would have preferred a more original story rather than a "rehashing of themes" or "blatant ripoff," depending on your point of view.

I saw it. Talk about redundant.

All of these are pretty redundant. I just don't get the appeal in all honesty.

That just seems like a REALLY quick development. I suppose if he's having a psychotic break with his whole personality just being shattered its believeable, but I never really saw it like that. I just seemed like he went from "I've got stop the Sith Lord" to "I'm willing to slaughter innocents for the Sith Lord" really quickly.

All could have been fixed with a few short shots/scenes.

My take is that in addition to playing the "I'm your friend who just supports you and gives to you" card, Palpatine was "pushing" Skywalker mentally all that time. Programming him, but also using the force to manipulate him

I think of it as a long-term Jedi mind trick of sorts. Show Palpatine "pushing" Anakin in person into doing something he isn't comfortable with (wait ... They started this on the ship when he kills Dooku, just don't follow through). Show Palpatine meditating, interspersed with Anakin again doing something against his code/the Jedi way.

The novelist took carries this out successfully, I thought. Not representing it in the movie leads to a lot of people feeling the way you do.

It's my belief you have to get hooked as a child. I was at the perfect age when the original came out. I'm sure if I watched it as an adult for the first time I would feel the same way.
