Bill Self said it would be a good season if KU made it to the Sweet 16. Wow how expectations have changed. Talk about a program that's on the downslide.

Their best bet would be to lose first round to save face

similar to how they lost to Baylor before Mizzou beat them in the conf tourney a few years ago

College Basketball's Most Valuable Teams: Louisville On Top, Kansas Close Behind

Roger Groves
Contributor
SportsMoney 3/16/2015 @ 11:36AM 9,690 views

The Louisville Cardinals are, for the fourth consecutive year, college basketball’s most valuable team. But the team’s financial success appears to have ebbed for the first time since 2009. This year Louisville is worth $38.3 million, down a hair from last year’s $39.5 million valuation. And while the Cardinals have stalled, much of the field is charging hard. The Kansas Jayhawks, the sport’s second-most valuable team, are up 7% to $35.4 million. It’s the first time that Louisville’s lead on the field has fallen beneath $5 million since the team took the top spot in 2012.

In order to rank college basketball's most valuable teams, we rely on a weighted methodology that takes into account how much money each team generates for its athletic department, its parent university and its fellow conference members.

Financial details are from the 2013-14 season, the most recent for which data is available. We adjust numbers as reported to the Department of Education in order to correct for differences in accounting practices between schools. Profit numbers listed herein represent a pre-tax operating income (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization).

Sources: Department of Education, NCAA, university athletic departments.

Ticket sales were up 11% to $12.8 million and the team also saw slight boosts in contributions and gameday revenue from things like concessions and parking. But NCAA and conference distributions were just $2.8 million, down from $5.8 million the year before, presumably the immediate impact of the Big East’s split (the AAC and new Big East split the rights to the old Big East’s NCAA conference distributions). Expenses were also up. Payments to the team’s coaching staff came to a total $5.7 million, up from $4.7 million the year before. Direct facility and maintenance spending also increased from $4.1 million to $4.5 million.

Meanwhile Kansas saw ticket sales climb to $14.5 million, up from $12.9 million the year before, which accounted for almost the entirety of its year-over-year revenue growth. Profits were further boosted by reduced spending. Last year the team spent $8.5 million, down from $10.7 million the prior year. Once again the vast majority of that change came from a single area. In this case coach Bill Self and his staff saw their total pay fall from $6 million in 2012-13 to $4.2 million last year.

Third on the list is Kentucky. The Wildcats have been stellar on the court, going to the Elite Eight or further in all but one season under head coach John Calipari. In his sixth season with the team Calipari has the Wildcats at 34-0 heading into this year’s tournament, where Kentucky is heavily favored to win it all. The team’s value fell this year, down 3% to $31.5 million, largely thanks to increased expenses from a run to last year’s championship game. Spending increased by $2.5 million, and it could have been worse – Calipari, who earned $275,000 in bonuses from making the Sweet 16 and Final Four, would have been owed another $375,000 had Kentucky taken home its ninth title.

Rounding out the top five are Arizona and North Carolina. The Pac-12′s top team has been steadily climbing the ranks, and this year moves from sixth to fourth. Arizona’s 13% growth in value to $28.5 million is tied to increases in ticket sales, sponsorships and distributions from the NCAA and Pac-12. Profits climbed by 10% despite the team taking on added spending in the form of a new scoreboard and hosting NIT Season Tip-Off games. Things also look great in Chapel Hill as UNC, one of the teams leapfrogged by Arizona, saw value climb 8% to $27.7 million this year.

To determine college basketball’s most valuable teams we rely on a weighted methodology that takes into account how much money each team generates for its athletic department, its parent university and its fellow conference members. A team’s athletic value consists of basketball profits used to support non-revenue programs like soccer and swimming. University value consists of basketball income that gets directed to academic endeavors, which include both basketball scholarship costs as well as contributions made to other academic initiatives. Finally, conference value simply measures how much money a team has generated for its fellow conference members via NCAA Tournament prize payouts.

"Try doing better in your league than 1-9 against winning teams." They didn't go 1 and 9. They won six games against winning conference teams, so you lied or are spinning again. It's pathetic. What's Ku's record against winning teams again?

What part of "in your league" don't you get?

Anyone can beat up on Savannah State.

Play a real round robin like the Big 12 then come talk to me. Until then enjoy your inflated schedule. You get it again next year... what a surprise.

Hmmm.....and Bambi gets caught lying again. Last time I checked, non-conference games count in the overall standings, and since his statement does specifically mention conference records, he is referring to overall record.

Bambi sure does love to lie...

Mizzou is 20 on the list....but I heard from PB that Mizzou is so awful that they should shut down the program...a bad season or two doesn't define you.

Yes that's actually Jack Harry. Old prick won't stand up and sack up and do it to Mizzou now. Oh and Hero: it isn't "one bad year or two" at Mizzou. I've thoroughly debunked that defense
