Branden Albert trade won’t happen unless he lowers his price

Branden Albert trade won’t happen unless he lowers his price

Branden Albert AP

The much-discussed potential trade of Branden Albert from the Chiefs to the Dolphins doesn’t appear likely at the price Albert is currently seeking.

Although the Chiefs and Dolphins can probably agree on compensation — the Dolphins sending a second-round pick to Kansas City — the hangup is that Albert wants the kind of money that the Dolphins aren’t willing to spend. Specifically, according to Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports, Albert wants between $8 million and $9 million a year on a long-term deal.

In other words, Albert is looking for the same kind of contract that left tackle Jake Long got from the Rams — the very contract the Dolphins wouldn’t give Long, which is why he left Miami for St. Louis.

If the Dolphins weren’t willing to pay Long that kind of money, it’s hard to see why they’d be willing to give up a second-round draft pick for the privilege of paying Albert that kind of money. So the Dolphins may need to look elsewhere for a left tackle. And Albert may have to settle for playing this season for the Chiefs, making $9.8 million, and hitting free agency next year.

Joeckel is a good pick only if you're very confident that Alex Smith will be a borderline top 10 QB for multiple years.

I'd be all for drafting an OT in the 1st round next year when we know what we have in Stephenson and see what happens with Albert.

I mean, Joeckel, even if he becomes a HoF will never be the difference between a SB or not.

And even the 2009 draft generated 50 or so starting caliber players in it.

And most scouts will admit that this class isn't strong at the top, but it is fairly deep through the middle. I've seen very few suggestions that this draft sucks overall, just that it is lacking a standout player.

There will be outstanding players from this draft.

OK. I don't remember it, but I'll take your word for it unless TBG says otherwise.

Just work the value throughout the draft. It's not rocket science.

The first round or two is great in the trenches. The middle rounds have good skill position players. The late rounds have good linebackers and running backs.

The problem: no QBs.

Miami has discussed sending 54th pick to Chiefs, but both sides still have to decide definitively whether to pull the trigger.

Does anyone actually like Jokers game?

I mean, do you hate him because hes not a QB, or do you hate his game?

If the Chiefs were picking 15th, would you still hate him?

And thinks to the efforts of Scooter, we only have a couple of more prime seasons out of our best players. Hali's going to be running on fumes this year, IMO and he's going to be the first to fall off. Charles will go in a couple of years and shortly after than we'll see Flowers falter (CBs with limited athleticism tend to crash sooner). DJ is older than we all realize and while he plays a position with decent longetivity, he's also probably looking at only 2-3 more seasons of high level play.

Folks - we're 3 years away from another rebuild. And the front office appears content with rebuilding around a !@#$ing left tackle.

This is exactly what the 2008 Miami Dolphins did - I mean to the !@#$ing letter. Right down to picking up an injury prone QB with multiple shoulder surgeries and a history of check-down passing.

They had Joey Porter at 31, kicking ass and taking names...for a season. Will Allen put out another damn solid season...and was out of football 3 years later. Ronnie Brown was in the prime of his career at 27, ran strong....and was a backup by 2011. Ayodele had been a solid starter for 5 years at ILB, had an okay season at age 30 for the 'phins and was also gone 3 years later.

All this team has that the 2008 Dolphins didn't is Bowe. That's it. And the 2008 Dolphins played well for a season, ate shit, and are now rebuilding how they should have rebuilt in 2008. In the NFL, you get old fast.

I cannot adequately express how disappointed I am in the path this team has chosen. It's just clearly wrong.

No obvious QBs.

I think there will be 2 average or better starting QBs to come out of this class. My bet is on Geno and Bray, but guys like Barkley and Manuel have the skills to do it as well. Even Nassib and Glennon have some tools.

People are saying it's a shit QB class because it isn't an easy QB class. Be prepared to be stung because in 3 years we're going to have the same conversations that the Dolphins had after going LT in 2008 instead of taking one of the 'flawed' but talented QBs on the board.

There will be quarterbacks from this class.

I just cannot get over the parallels between the Chiefs off-season and the 2008 Dolphins. Its uncanny.

Nope. The 2009 Chiefs had just re-stocked their cupboard and committed to a youth movement the year before. They had a lot of young talent and just needed a couple of good drafts and a QB to pull it all together.

This team doesn't have near the young talent on it that the 2009 Chiefs had. The 2009 Chiefs didn't have the first overall pick (they'd have taken Stafford). The 2009 Chiefs didn't go out and acquire an injury-prone veteran QB.

If you'd have taken the team titles off the rosters/transactions and compared the two, you'd have never suggested that the 2013 Chiefs are running an offseason like the 2009 Chiefs did. The only thing that's the same is the name.

The 2008 Dolphins, OTOH, ran precisely this playbook from precisely this position with almost exactly the same roster construction.

And they were wrong.
