Branden Albert trade won’t happen unless he lowers his price

Branden Albert trade won’t happen unless he lowers his price

Branden Albert AP

The much-discussed potential trade of Branden Albert from the Chiefs to the Dolphins doesn’t appear likely at the price Albert is currently seeking.

Although the Chiefs and Dolphins can probably agree on compensation — the Dolphins sending a second-round pick to Kansas City — the hangup is that Albert wants the kind of money that the Dolphins aren’t willing to spend. Specifically, according to Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports, Albert wants between $8 million and $9 million a year on a long-term deal.

In other words, Albert is looking for the same kind of contract that left tackle Jake Long got from the Rams — the very contract the Dolphins wouldn’t give Long, which is why he left Miami for St. Louis.

If the Dolphins weren’t willing to pay Long that kind of money, it’s hard to see why they’d be willing to give up a second-round draft pick for the privilege of paying Albert that kind of money. So the Dolphins may need to look elsewhere for a left tackle. And Albert may have to settle for playing this season for the Chiefs, making $9.8 million, and hitting free agency next year.

I guess I was adding to that. Miami would have more leverage if they were the only buyer.

Since Miami has one already the MUST sign Albert to a new deal before finalizing the trade.

If Detroit, Arizona and Miami all want Joeckel...and Dorsey is who we thought he was...the Chiefs are going to clean up.

If they follow the trade chart, the Dolphins could get #3 with the #12 and their two seconds. Little short for #1, but I would take that deal in a heart beat.

After the way Dorsey got bent over in the Alex Smith trade, how can anyone have high expectations for Dorsey and trades?

We need to recover a pick for next year so they can give us next years 2nd or 3rd too.

Report: Dolphins, Chiefs resume dialogue about Branden Albert

Posted by Josh Alper on April 24, 2013, 10:42 AM EDT

AP
Earlier this week, word out of Kansas City and Miami was that the Chiefs and Dolphins were not communicating about a possible trade involving Chiefs tackle Branden Albert.

That picture appears to have changed. According to Ed Werder of ESPN during an appearance on SportsCenter, the two sides have “resumed dialogue” about a trade that would likely involve one of the two second-round picks that the Dolphins currently have in their possession. Whether that pick is the 42nd or 54th overall is one of the obstacles the teams would need to navigate to get a deal done by Friday night.

There’s also the matter of Albert’s contract. He’s signed his franchise tender for the 2013 season, which guarantees him $9.828 million unless he signs a long-term deal. Getting such a deal done would seem to be necessary for the Dolphins to pull the trigger, although it is unclear if they are willing to meet Albert’s reported demands. Per Werder, Albert wants a deal worth $36 million over four years.

Albert also had back issues that cost him three games in 2012 which likely makes a physical a necessary step before a deal can be consummated. And there’s also the matter of the Chiefs not yet revealing their plans for the top pick, something that could impact the deal if, as expected, the Chiefs take either Luke Joeckel or Eric Fisher with the top pick. Adding a left tackle with the top pick would make it a bit harder for the Chiefs to press the Dolphins for the higher of the two second-round picks although it would also eliminate an option for Miami if General Manager Jeff Ireland is considering trading up for Joeckel, Fisher or Lane Johnson.

I don't think this is the time to start making demands. If we get a reasonable offer, we should take it. Dorsey should be like a cheesy car salesman and announce that he's not coming down from the roof until he makes a deal. He can give away hotdogs, hire a balloon artist, and put one of those inflatable arm waving things out in front of Arrowhead.

Sounds like Miami doesn't think a top tackle will still be on the board when they pick, so they need Albert. They will likely give us their higher second round pick if this is the case.
