Don't recall. Sometime in the middle of that malaise of shitty play. I may be putting one on him that wasn't his I guess.

Rookie deal is great, but bottomline is if you have a top shelf QB, you have a chance every year. Chiefs need to just keep drafting better because aside from Mitch Schwartz, they haven't had success in FA spending big money.

Smith isn't get an extension here (at least he damn sure shouldn't). Meanwhile, if he continues to play at even 80% of what he's doing now, he'll end up having a career year by FAR. He'll throw for 4000 yards and 30 TDs at that point and he'll do it with unmatched efficiency. He'll be a year younger than he'd be in 2019 (his FA year). There will be no better time for him to actually discuss contract extension. And since he's not getting it here, the only way for him to turn that into real dialogue is if he gets traded. If Andy sees Mahomes as a possible future star, his loyalty to his players may actually serve to create a trade in that it would put Smith in the best possible position to capitalize on a career year. Just a thought.

I mean the Giants were seen as examples of how to 'win' in free agency with Harrison and Jenkins last year. This year they suck again. Free agency is a band-aid. The fact that the Chiefs are likely to get good value from Schwartz every year of his contract makes him a MASSIVE outlier as far as FA goes. By and large, if you get 2 seasons worth of production from a veteran FA, you're doing better than many. Very few teams truly get premier production from free agent signings.

An ideal situation for us and him, is if Cousins leaves Washington. They could send us a couple picks for Smith and it's win win |

The chiefs haven't had cap space because their best players have come up for deals and they've generally kept them. It hasn't exactly worked out like they'd hoped but it's better than spending on outside guys |

Yep, Andy had no problem getting rid of McNabb just after a monster year. He'll do the same thing Jim Harbaugh did to Smith and he'll be a Jaguar/Brown next year, for better or worse.

Then again, I'd have never expected the market for McCarron that evidently developed and the price for Garropollo was stupid, IMO. So the QB market is a little hotter than I thought. I get that Garropollo is a different animal due to youth but WTF is McCarron (who's just bad) getting a real market for? I'd take Smith over McCarron every time.

We will have $$. The problem I think you guys aren't taking into account is that teams won't want to give up a 1st for a 34 year old QB that probably has a lifespan of 2-3 quality years at best. IMO the best offer we get for Alex is a 2nd.

Which makes him still being on the team understandable but frustrating. His issues seem to be mental, which is fixable, but he hasn’t fixed it after 3-4 years. It makes you wonder if he ever will. |

I said when the season started that the only way I could see the Chiefs getting a 1st was if a team in the 20s needed a short-term bridge at QB but had the defensive skill to be a playoff team right away. The Jags are just perfectly situated there. They need an upgrade at QB and have no definitive long-term answer. Their defense may well keep them from being able to trade way up and grab a guy in the top 10 who could play immediately, especially given the state of the rest of their division. So if they give up a 1st for Smith and extend him for 3 years (taking him from 34-37) with an out after the 2nd year of the extension, they have a perfect setup to take a developmental QB in the 2nd round and have him waiting in the wings. But yeah, it's far more likely that we end up with something like the Browns 2nd rounder. The Jets might also be a possibility.

Even a 2nd would be a nice addition to improve the front 7.
