Last year, the entire team relied on Embiid to bail them out, never had to develop much in that area, and were worse team defenders as a result. This year, they don't have that kind of crutch and it's forced them to play much better team defense to win games. For example, their improved defense was really the primary reason they won the Texas game on Saturday despite having the lowest eFG% in a victory in the Self era.

That isn't to say that last year's team didn't have more talent or a higher ceiling than this one because it certainly did (at least in my opinion). But the 2013-2014 team never fully got on track the way they could have. Embiid simply wasn't able to stay healthy and be the total force he very likely would have been in March.

Both teams were/are well below the quality of the average Self team, though (which makes winning conference in these years as they did even more impressive).

1. .9753 (2008) *The highest ever rating in his system until this year's UK at .9792 (at least so far).
2. .9635 (2010)
3. .9423 (2012)
4. .9419 (2007)
5. .9409 (2011)
6. 9302 (2013)
7. .9194 (2009)
8. 9179 (2006)
9. .9142 (2015),
10. .9034 (2004)
11. .9018 (2014)
12. .9014 (2005)
That's all well and good but I'll tell you what is the biggest reason for the defensive improvement. No Tharpe.

Also, Ellis has gotten better on the defensive end. Actually, I would say a lot better.

Sorry bro, and maybe you're right ...

I just have a hard time thinking this soft ass team featuring Perry Ellis is better than the Jayhawks were, at their best, with Wiggins and Embiid last year.

It isn't logical.

Their not, not even close...

this team will exit the NCAA's very early and if they make the S16 it will be a complete miracle.

The tourney is a strange animal. I don't know what this team will do.

I refuse to panic about what they will or won't do until I see the bracket. They certainly play down to their competition, but that's been a reoccurring theme for a while now, so that's not what worries me. Living and dying by the three is what will catch up to this team.

Frank needs to be fresh above all else. He's our motor and if Perry can continue to use his size and skill-set at an above-average clip then we can have a fun March.

Vegas has us at 20/1 to win the whole thing. Kentucky is at 4/5.

KU might make an Elite 8 run ... only because they do have talent, and because they are tested this year (a lot of close games).

the overall talent in the NCAA this year is down. So yeah, I could see them going on a run. I could also see them losing in the 1st round.

I think I am going to knock out Kentucky early in a lot of pools just because no one else is going to dare

I still think - win tonight you have to consider resting a couple of the guys against OU.

Heh. I'm thinking they might get knocked off too, it's just hard to pick the game. Ole miss had no business being competitive with them. It'll be some assbag team that does it.

Mason for sure. Not sure who else I'd chop the minutes off of. Selden?

Frank is the only one I'd really consider sitting. Let Graham get some heavy lifting in at Norman and in the B12 tourney.

I don't think we're gonna see Coach significantly reduce anyone's minutes, so I really don't see him "sitting" anyone tonight. Maybe 5 or so fewer minutes for Mason and Ellis, but that's not exactly "sitting" anyone. I suspect coach wants "One True Champion", so unless the game gets outa hand one way or the other, I think most will see their normal minutes this evening.
