At least now we know why Kim Anderson was hired, and just how in the hell he is still employed.

So, how many years is it going to take to turn this disaster around? Or is it even possible at this point?

Nothing is impossible, but it's going to take a while for the stigma to be worn off. The whole college is a disaster these days, it's hard to argue otherwise.

I'd have to say the program's at a lower point now than it was after Snyder.

This is the least attractive this job has been since Norm took it. And given the fact that we have relatively new facilities and played in a conference that, until recently, didn't give a shit about basketball makes that exponentially more irritating.

This has to be one of the most complete collapses of a top 25 program in NCAABB history. Mizzou wasn't a blue blood, but they were a solid program that could attract good coaches and good talent. Now they might well be the least attractive power 5 job in the country.

Well, I'm sure for the right price they could get a blue-blood who could clear-up the ethics question, but I suspect MIZZOU isn't willing to buy their way toward absolution.

Maybe I'm not seeing an angle that you are, but...

If our facilities are as good or better than most, and we are willing to pay as much or more than most (I doubt at this point that is true), then I don't see why your conclusion would be fact.
I guess if there were more penalties coming, that would matter.

Basketball is easy to rebuild a program. You can have a good team, quick.

There's little to nothing in the cupboard, whatever recruiting inroads we ever had are gone and our name has been mud in our most fertile recruiting area (Stl) for years.

The facilities WERE better than most, but a lot of places have caught up and at this point they're probably slightly above average. Additionally, as you've noted, we probably AREN'T willing to pay as much or more than most for our coach. Finally, fan support has dwindled to pretty much nothing so it's not like you're going to come into a packed house.

College sports and college basketball in particular are about momentum. Once it's gone, it's just hard as hell to get it back unless you have an exceptional foundation. Mizzou doesn't and hasn't for years. It was that foundation that made the recovery from Snyder fairly manageable but it has eroded to sand at this point.

There's an excellent chance that this is a doormat program for another 10 years. They've driven this thing low enough that they're facing a KU football kind of mountain to get to even respectable, let along legitimately good.

I agree with your first two paragraphs. However, if we were to up the ante and bring in a very good coach, then the fans would come.
I don't agree with the momentum thing. Huggins turned a K State program that was a doormat for a couple of decades into basically what Mizzou has been in my lifetime. A good coach who can bring in a few big time recruits would fix all of that. The fans would come. The facilities would come. And the momentum wouldn't matter.

IMO

How are you going to get a very good coach? We had a chance with Howland and pissed on him.

What the hell good coach with immediate recognition to draw recruits in here is going to come to Mizzou at this point?

Because what you're suggesting won't happen if you find Brad Stevens before he's Brad Stevens. You need Huggins after he's Huggins. That's how he gets Walker, Beasley, Bennett, etc... If you want a quick turnaround, that's the only way to do it and even that requires a fair amount of luck.

This isn't a team starting at zero - it's starting at negative ten. Sure, if you put every job in the country on 'even footing' and told them to go get a coach, perhaps Mizzou could snag a slightly above average coach with some name recognition, but the piss poor performance of this program over the last several years has ensure that Mizzou isn't on even footing. They're starting this particular race 10 meters behind. What you're talking about is a sprint and over 100m, they ain't gonna make those 10 meters up. But hey, give 'em a mile and maybe they'll get there.

In essence, you're treating 'get a good coach' like Clay and others treat 'get a franchise quarterback'. Well no shit....now just exactly what does this program have to offer to get said good coach? At this point I'm hoping we can just get an average one and maybe we'll be able to better-deal him after some poor tournament runs.
