Bad news

SimplyRed started a thread about me not long ago. I thought I'd start one with the latest. I got very bad news today. My colon cancer got into my liver and the doc said it is stage 4. She said it can't be cured. Without treatment, I might last 10 weeks. Even with chemo, the best I could hope for is maybe 3 years. I'm scheduled to have a port put in tomorrow, Tuesday, at 1 pm. They start me on 3 types of chemo on Thursday.

Thank you very much! I've never felt like I was anything special and still don't but if I am inspiring folks now, I am glad to know it. I did ask God to let me do some good, no matter if I have days left, months, years, or if I end up beating this cancer. I'm giving it all I have to do the latter.

I've got some good news to add to my bad news thread today. Bear with me, as I start this, it won't sound so good, but it will get there. Today is usually the worst day of the year for me, ironically in one of my favorite months. 34 years ago today, my best friend was killed in a car wreck. We were twin sons of different mothers and losing him was such a horrible shock and left a hole within me that is still there to this day. 12 year olds aren't supposed to get killed in car wrecks.

Today, however, I am not feeling the loss despite thinking, "Wow, can it really be 34 years?" He doesn't feel so far away from me today. Looking outside here in west Olathe, it might seem to some a crappy day. It's 51 degrees, cloudy and gray, and fine mist is falling. I went out for a walk to the lake, about a mile or so there and back, and I loved every step. The mist has made foggy layers of gray out in the distance and it took me back to 2005 in Denmark when I stayed overnight in a castle and to this past May when I was inducted into the King Christian IV Guild. Both days had weather not unlike today and both days were high points of my trips, if not my years.

I could smell autumn approaching in the oaks today, and I love that smell. The mist cooled my face as I walked and everything is still so lush and green, but I know a gorgeous autumn is close and the colors this year should be amazing. I stopped on a ledge overlooking the lake and saw mist rising from the water and a few ducks swimming along. My body felt energized even on my return and I had a good pace going, broke a little sweat and my heart felt strong. I smiled, thinking how nice a hot bowl of chicken noodle soup was going to be when I got back to the house. I walked through the pasture past my fruit trees, and smiled at them. I got to eat several delicious pears this year, since the squirrels left me some for a change. A new honey crisp apple tree I planted three years ago surprised me and bore 11 apples this year and I got to eat 4 of them. That tree is barely taller than I am. I've never had honey crisp apples before and with the first bite, I thought, "Oh, these ARE properly named!" I even got to eat some peaches from two of my peach trees this year and they were spectacularly good. There are only a few pears left way up in the tree, so I'll let the squirrels have them. I saw the mist gathering on the leaves of my fruit trees and hoped for another good yield next year.

I stopped in the pasture and turned around in a circle, just looking at everything before me, smelling the damp air that was thick with smells of things still growing, savored the contrast of warmth coming from my torso and the cool chill on my face, arms and legs, and almost said aloud, "This is a magnficent day." So it isn't sunny and 72, but don't get me wrong, I love a day and sunset under those conditions, too. This was a wonderful preview of what I love about autumn and I feel great, happy, and alive.

My soup should be hot by now, so I'll post this and go.

Thanks, brother! I had an organic peanut butter and high fructose free grape jelly sammich with my soup, because that walk kicked my appetite up even more. Oh, and I am going out to Minsky's tonight for that pepperoni pizza I've been craving! I think I will order it with extra cheese, too. And a salad.

Ugh. Now I am hungry again.

That is great perspective. We don't take joy from the simple things often enough.

I found a way around my salivary gland tweaking thing, so if any of you are going through chemo or know someone who is and have the same side effect as me, here is what I did. Instead of eating my banana first with breakfast, I tried my eggs. They didn't make me cringe and then I tried the banana, and there was no reaction. Eat neutral foods first, or less intensely flavored ones to prep the mouth and then eat the other stuff. I hope this can help someone else out!

Ed I admire your resolve and courage!

What the hell-I suggest you try this: bend over and slide the banana up your ass, take two eggs and cover your breasts, then take the oatmeal neutral food you speak off and smear your face. Once you have got this completed, take off all your clothes and run around the neighborhood.

See what happens and post the photos and results on Chiefsplanet!

Once you get arrested, tell the police your name is Clay!

Foggy is good, but so are sunny days! I enjoyed one the very next day after I had my walk in the drizzly, chilly day. The sky was blue, almost like the old Royals uniforms and it was 66 degrees, and a pure delight as well. There is something to enjoy and love about most any kind of weather, aside from strong storms.

Although this falls under the bad news thread, I have some good stuff to report. Two good friends came over this evening and I cooked meatloaf, Danish style so that means no ketchup, mashed potatoes, green beans, and a salad with green pepper from my garden. We also enjoyed Hacker-Pschorr Oktoberfest beer with the dinner. My friend Chipp brought me a case of it and Chris brought me some chocolates with hazelnut that he got in Italy.

Cancer be damned, I will NOT die before I finish those chocolates!
