SI : Chiefs have a problem and his name is Dwayne Bowe

His performance so far this season has been underwhelming. He is in a position to clock in his worst performance in the NFL so far and is projecting to have 54 receptions for 586 yards w/6TD.

Is his problem that defenses are keying in on him... or is it that, as suggested by Greg Bedard, that Bowe has lost a step and is no longer a top tier WR?

6. The Chiefs will win a lot of games with their current formula: good defense that takes the ball away (15 times so far) and an offense that doesn’t turn it over (just five) for an NFL-leading plus-10 in giveaways/takeaways. But to beat the good teams, they’re going to have to start stretching the field. Defenses know QB Alex Smith is overly conservative, so they’re dropping a safety down and playing a lot of man. The Chiefs have a big problem with receiver Dwayne Bowe. Not sure what has happened to him, but he lacks explosion and can’t beat man coverage anymore. Defenses don’t fear him at all.

The problem is that "game manager" has basically become the same thing as "true fan." It's a catch all term for people to criticize a QB they think is too conservative.

A game manager approach works very well if you have an elite QB who can handle it. And I still believe this approach works a hell of a lot better than the overrated explosive offense everyone has a stiffy for.

Before I panic about Alex Smith's 6.5 YPA, I'd like to see a little bit better pass-blocking. YPAs is the best overall measure of a team's ability to move the ball through the air, but it is function of more than the QB. Brady is usually near the top; this year he is below Alex Smith.

Haven't read the whole thread, but I agree with SNR's analysis that nothing's wrong with Bowe, and that Smith is just Smith.

Like SNR said, they will have to meet in the middle. Bowe will have to run more routes that are friendly to Smith's game.

I really could care less about Smith's YPA. One of the most overrated stats in the book, because it assumes there's only one way to play offense. With the type of game we're playing, what we have to see is better 3rd down efficiency. He's been up and down. Against Tennessee, he was terrible early on.

Eat a dick. In 2011 he had two games with under 30 yards receiving and no scores.

He had two more of those in 2012.

In 2010 he had two games where he was held to one reception.

Yup,the beauty is we can win a superbowl just fine with an alex smith and since nobody else considers him elite we won't have to overpay him and gut the team.

Teams with good offenses have high YPAs. There is some luck involved on 3rd down conversions.

I think our passing attack will improve as the season goes on. I really don't think the problem is Smith or Bowe, but a new offensive blocking scheme and a new offensive system.

To win in the playoffs, you generally need an above average defense and an above average offense. Seems we have a dominant defense, in which case, the offense only needs to be average. It's not there yet, but I think it will be once the O-line gets on the same page. I'm an offense homer, but I must say I'm really enjoying the 5-0 start, and am not really worried about Alex Smith at all yet.

In the original way you used the word, you made it seem like "shutout" just meant he had a game with poor stats.

This thread is hilarious. Who gives a flying **** about Bowe's numbers?

Bowe was a 1,000 yard receiver when the TEAM had records of 4-12, 2-14, 4-12, 10-6, 7-9 and 2-14: ONE winning season in SIX. Four unbearable and embarrassing seasons.

Yet, the Chiefs are a legit 5-0 and counting, led by some of the best offensive minds in the NFL in Reid, Childress and Ault, yet Bowe is on pace for 750 yards?

WHO ****ING CARES?

This isn't fantasy football. If Bowe isn't running perfect routes or getting enough separation to make the QB throw to him or the head coach and OC design plays for him, **** him.

It's not the Kansas City Bowe's.

How about you clearly define what you mean next time? Then I can give you some relevant data and have a conversation.

Nothing I've said to you in the past two days you've been actively posting has been a lie. You claim you bring nothing but truth to the table, but that's not exactly an accomplishment. We're dealing with opinions and speculations, so quit acting like the Holy Dove sat on your shoulder and whispered into your ear the Truth of the World like you're ****ing St. Gregory. You're not that special.
