John Dorsey reportedly candidate for Packers GM

When the Packers face the Giants in Sunday's wild-card game, the focus will be on the field. But the future of the man who built the Packers is one that is being fiercely debated in Green Bay. How long 63-year-old general manager Ted Thompson, with two years left on his contract, continues in his current job is an open question.

Now, an intriguing name has emerged as a potential successor: Chiefs GM John Dorsey.


Dorsey, a former Packers player who cut his teeth in Green Bay under Hall of Fame architect Ron Wolf, has not yet signed a contract extension, sources said. He's in the final year of his deal, potentially opening the door to him leaving what he helped build in Kansas City to work at Lambeau Field.

Sources said Dorsey is incredibly well-regarded by the Packers executive committee, including President and CEO Mark Murphy, from his time as a scout, Director of College Scouting and Director of Football Operations. Timing would have to be perfect, but if Thompson steps away to take a senior scouting role as some involved believe, Dorsey would be in a position to step in this year.

Dorsey and coach Andy Reid have worked hand-in-hand over the past four years to build the Chiefs into a consistent winner, and they are seeded second in the AFC playoffs. The Chiefs intend to give a contract extension to Reid this offseason, a source said. After this year, Reid will be in the final year of his deal.

The list of successors to Thompson is an intriguing one. It includes Director of Football Operations Eliot Wolf, who interviewed this week for the 49ers' open GM job. While he was blocked from interviewing for the Lions' GM job last year, his interview this year means he could be leaving. There is also Russ Ball, the vice president of football administration, who is universally respected in the NFL and by the executive committee. Director of Player Personnel Brian Gutekunst and Senior Personnel Executive Alonzo Highsmith are among the talented members of the Packers' front office.

With Dorsey entering the picture, it adds some intrigue to the future of the Packers' front office.

Carr?? Would be smart to have a qb with the ability to play at a decent level working on his rookie contract still?? Is he currently better than Smith? Who knows, but he sure seems to put up better numbers with lesser offensive weapons. I'm no big Alex fan,'or hater. But he can litteraly drive me ****ing bonkers, or make me want my wife to have his children on a bi weekly basis. I'd be happy to know our team WILL draft a qb that falls into their lap. They just havent proven that to me yet...

Dorsey more than any other Chiefs GM I've ever seen has been stellar at seeing around the corners of the roster and using the draft to plug holes in the roster before they even have the chance to become exposed. I'd like to think that same effort and strategy applies ESPECIALLY to the QB position.

I was a really angry person in 2012 and 2013, listening to fans with Eeyore voices go, "Oh nooo... we need a QB and there just aren't any good prospects available. That's just our luck." Yeah, you can fall ass over tea kettle into Tom Brady or Russell Wilson. That can happen. You can get lucky and suck at just the right time so that the perfect QB you need is sitting right there staring at you waiting for you to hand him a Chiefs hat and a #1 jersey and snap the ****ing photo with Goodell. Or you can do what the Packers did and take matters into your own hands. Your QB's getting long in the tooth? Trying to squeeze the last few years out of your franchise guy? Then plan a****inghead and start drafting QBs. Take one every year in the late rounds. Try to find a midrounder that intrigues you. Pull the trigger IMMEDIATELY the very instant you come across a high-profile prospect you think could be your next guy.

If we approach this situation like we did the end of Trent Green's career and just sit and fart around until Smith retires or can't play anymore, we're going to be "forced" to trade for another backup.

Lucky for us that Reid has a history of being proactive with the QBs his team drafts. That and Dorsey's record of personnel-building lends me to believe that they ARE indeed planning ahead into the future at the QB position.
