LEE'S SUMMIT, MO (KCTV) -
Students at Lee's Summit North High School were sent home early on Friday after another student tragically took their own life in a second-floor bathroom.

Lee's Summit police responded to the school at about 7:50 a.m.

Students at the school reported hearing a gunshot from a second-floor bathroom. Police entered the room and found a student. That student was taken to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The student passed away soon after arriving at the hospital.

The school, located at 901 NE Douglas Street, was put on a soft lockdown and students were kept in their classrooms so paramedics could quickly get upstairs. Then, all students not involved in the incident were sent home at 9:15 a.m.

Police do not believe that anyone was in the bathroom when the incident happened, but they are still trying to figure out if students and teachers ran into the bathroom to help after hearing the gunshot.

Officers did not say how the student tried to inflict harm.

The school district says only LSN will be released early.

Students who drive themselves to school were able to leave on their own and normal bus routes continued.

The district notified parents of the incident.

Friday's football game between Lee's Summit North High School and Blue Springs High School has been postponed. The game will be played at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

According to the city of Lee's Summit, the district provided counselors to students and staff who wanted to talk after the dismissal today. A plan is in place to continue that support next week.

Officers with the Lee's Summit Police Department are in the process of talking with family. Sgt. Chris Depue said, “Our hearts are broken right along with district staff. It’s a tragic event.”

Police are also building a timeline and trying to figure out where the weapon came from.

There is help available for those who need it.

I had a girlfriend in High School who passed away a few years ago. Her daughter was a student at LSN about ten years ago, and committed suicide at home. Very hard on the family and all the friends of the family. Suicide affect a lot more people than you might think. One of my best friends killed himself two years ago. It still makes me angry and incredibly sad.

Very sad to hear. Suicide is such a selfish act, but I sometimes wonder if people even consider that aspect.

over 7 years for my brother, I'm still not anywhere close to over it.

if they were thinking rationally they wouldn't do it, but that lack of rationality is the cause. My brother thought things would be easier on his daughter if she didn't have to go through a very very nasty divorce. His ex was trying to ruin his life in any way possible. He wrote that he thought it would be easier on everyone not to have go through that.

Not everyone is a mass shooter. Some just feel alone, hurt, or afraid. It doesn't have to be uglier to be as ugly as it already is. It's just too bad there wasn't a way for them to see a different way out. RIP and prayers to his/her friends and family

Had a friend kill himself his senior year of high school. NO ONE saw it coming. Went home for lunch one day, planted himself in his famly's backyard shed, put the shotgun between his legs and blew his head off (literally).

He left a note in the house as he knew his sister would come home first. Said "Please call the cops. DO NOT come find me." She went and found him. Literally half his head was blown off. She'll never forget those images. Truly sad.

I once worked with a patient who tried to kill himself. He was a 17 year old autistic kid. Somehow when he put the gun inside his mouth, he had it tilted too far forward and literally blow off his entire nose and upper jaw. Was just a gaping triangle shaped hole where those two items were. Missed his brain completely.

Get help if you ever think that's the answer. It's ok to admit you feel hopeless.
