Gunther Cunningham, a man who has worked in football for nearly half a century, has been with the Detroit Lions since 2009. However, his long career in coaching is finally taking a turn as he leaves the sidelines and the booth for a job with Pro Football Focus as Director of Football Oversight.

The news was announced by Cris Collinsworth, who in addition to being on Sunday Night Football also happens to own PFF.

“We are thrilled to add to our PFF family one of the true legends of defensive football,” Pro Football Focus CEO/Owner and NBC Sunday Night Football color analyst Cris Collinsworth said. “Gunther Cunningham is such a unique coach and person. He has always connected with his players in such a deep personal way, and his aggressive style of defense has always made him a player and fan favorite.

“The rare aspect of Gunther’s career is how this old school coach has embraced today’s data analytics. It is the blending of that traditional football acumen with modern technical expertise that makes Gunther such a perfect fit for PFF.

Truth in posting- Gun and I and our wives are old friends so I'll state my bias up front. Gun has always been very polarizing professionally due to his passion ("fire and brimstone" is no Act). Coaching for almost 50 years and over 30 in the NFL requires adability to move with/beyond fire and brimstone but you are who you are. I linked 1 of my favorite Chiefs Gun deals from 12 years ago. His personal loyalty has actually been 1 of his professional vices. He found out that Peterson fired him as a head coach from the inter web. Chiefs asked him back to help out Vermeil. He didn't tell his own agent- just signed the offer and returned. Vermeil and Peterson gave him a defense with almost no Day 1 draft picks. He was trying to stop race horses with farm ponies. His D.C. Record speaks for itself across the league. He still hates the Raiders even after that cloven hoofed bitch Al Davis died. It's personal as is most things with Gun. Broncos never were-just business particularly with Shanahan. Just competition. Ruck the Faiders.

I happened into a Price Chopper one evening (in like '94-95) and Gunther was there shopping. I said "hello Coach" and 25 minutes later we stopped talking. The man was an absolute pleasure to speak to. Hell, he acted like he had known me for years. Class act.
