I used to call it the "rule of 9s" when I was helping my kids learn math, except we used it for multiplication:

9 times any number N equals: (Nx10) - N

N=5 --> 9x5 = (5x10)-5 = 50-5 = 45

N=27 --> 9x27 = (27x10)-27 = 270-27 = 243

Not sure I knew this trick. I always add digits to see if the larger number is divisible by 3 (or 9). In your example of 243, add the digits (2+4+3=9) and you can tell the initial number is divisible by 9 (and 3 of course).

Yeah. The extra little trick the site does is mix up the symbols so each time you see a different symbol. However, as already said, all the symbols under multiples of 9 are the same each time.

This was always one of my favorites. I just thought of Jack Burton, and it got it. Crazy.

Haven't checked it out, but it sounds like a sister site to whatever site TigerUppercut goes to get Alex Smith stats. Fact.

I show my kids a method on their hands. If you hold out both of your hands, palms away, and put your first finger (from left to right, so pinky) down. This equates to 9x1 and count the remaining fingers up. Then you put the 2nd finger down (ring finger and pinky back down) the finger down represents the space between the two digits 9x2= 1|8. 3rd finger: 9x3=2|7

Much easier to show than type.
