Chiefs' 53-man roster includes Tyler Bray, Kevin Hogan as backup QBs -Teicher

http://espn.go.com/blog/kansas-city-...-as-backup-qbs

The Kansas City Chiefs wrapped up their offseason program Thursday and open training camp in late July at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph. Here’s a 53-man roster projection:

QUARTERBACKS (3): Alex Smith, Tyler Bray, Kevin Hogan

The Chiefs have yet to make any final decisions for their backups behind Smith, their starter. Bray has the most in terms of physical tools. They won’t cut Hogan, a rookie and a fifth-round draft pick. Murray could win a job with a strong preseason.

RUNNING BACKS (3): Jamaal Charles, Spencer Ware, Charcandrick West

This portion of the roster looks set. There’s no room for Davis, who was passed on the depth chart last season by Ware and West.

FULLBACK (1): Anthony Sherman

Sherman has held the job since Andy Reid arrived as head coach in 2013. He has what the Chiefs are looking for in this position, plus he’s solid on special teams.

WIDE RECEIVERS (6): Jeremy Maclin, Albert Wilson, Chris Conley, Rod Streater, Demarcus Robinson, Tyreek Hill

There’s no room for Thomas, who will lose his job to Hill, a fifth-round draft pick.

TIGHT ENDS (4): Travis Kelce, Demetrius Harris, Ross Travis, Brian Parker

It’s unorthodox for a team to keep four healthy players here, but the Chiefs could well go this way. Kelce, Harris and Travis are the receiving options; the 265-pound Parker gives them a big-bodied blocker.

OFFENSIVE LINEMEN (8): Eric Fisher, Parker Ehinger, Mitch Morse, Laurent Duvernay-Tardif, Mitchell Schwartz, Jah Reid, Zach Fulton, Jarrod Pughsley

The Chiefs will keep at least two more linemen on their practice squad.

DEFENSIVE LINEMEN (5): Allen Bailey, Dontari Poe, Jaye Howard, Chris Jones, Nick Williams

The Chiefs might want to keep more big guys, but they won’t have roster room for that.

LINEBACKERS (9): Dee Ford, Tamba Hali, Frank Zombo, Dezman Moses, Dadi Nicholas, Derrick Johnson, Josh Mauga, Justin March, Ramik Wilson

Houston is the wild card here. I’m assuming he won’t be ready to play when the regular season begins. If the Chiefs carry him on the roster, then Moses goes.

CORNERBACKS (5): Marcus Peters, Phillip Gaines, Steven Nelson, Marcus Cooper, KeiVarae Russell

The picture here solidified in offseason practice with the return of Gaines to the starting lineup from a torn ACL and Nelson’s solid play as the nickel back. Cooper also helped himself by making some plays.

SAFETY (6): Eric Berry, Ron Parker, Stevie Brown, Jamell Fleming, Daniel Sorensen, Eric Murray

Six is a lot of safeties, but they’ll all play a role with the possible exception of Murray. But as a fourth-round pick, he’ll make the team.

SPECIALISTS (3): Dustin Colquitt, Cairo Santos, James Winchester

Unless things change, the Chiefs will go into the season with Colquitt as their punter, Santos as their kicker and Winchester as their long snapper.

They keep Ross Travis as a 4th TE over Oshaunnesy?

They cut Aaron Murray? I mean, I could see them trading him for a pick, no way they outright cut him.

DJ White and Tre Jones get cut, but they keep Fleming and Cooper? Gentlemen, get out the pitchforks.

They cut Ta'Amu and Roches?

I'd cut Brown, Cooper, Moses and Travis while replacing them with DJ White, Tre Jones, Oshaunnesy and either Ta'Amu or Roches.

Adding to that, I'd try hard to stash one of the QBs on IR and trade Thomas to SF if Rod Streater seems like he will make an impact...if Streater doesn't seem 100% all in, I'd cut him and keep Thomas to save 4.8m against the cap.

Sure, but I don't think it matters what they are in Suttons sub package, a defensive back that will play in the box, drop down and cover the nickel or dime at the LOS like Branch did, etc. They will still be used as a corner sometimes.

The problem is I think Branch/Abdullah to whatever combination of Cooper/Fleming/Brown/Sorensen is a massive drop off. I guess I'm cheering for Sorensen to become a nice part time starter as hes the only one that's gradually improved in his time here out of the bunch or that Brown is a nice veteran surprise similar to the previous 1 year veteran rehab safeties we had since 2013.

It looks like you have one roster spot to fill. I count 53 names, but you have Hill listed as a receiver and as a returner. So actually, your roster is at only 52.

I'm thinking they feel murray can step into that abdullah role. Hopefully cooper or Fleming is better at safety than on the outside.

Eric Murray will be the #3 safety.

While I agree there will be somewhat of a dropoff, we will be better off in the long run (getting younger) and when our safeties end up in man coverage IMO.

Murray was a very good tackler who could cover the intermediate part of the field well. He struggled against fast WR's defending the deep ball.

I think he'll make the biggest impact of any rookie this season. Think this is a great fit for him.

So, according to Teicher, the Chiefs are going to cut Aaron Murray, a fifth round selection from 2014 who was taken one spot ahead of AJ McCarron, who played well for the Bengals last season in relief of Andy Dalton? If so, Dorsey screwed the pooch.

Also, according to Teicher, the Chiefs are going to cut 5th round selection James O'Shaugnessy, who has idea size and played well before being injured early last season over two undrafted free agents? Parker was garbage in the blocking game last season, yet Teicher sees it as a strength? Ross Travis hasn't played football in 4 years. He's a basketball player trying to make it as a tight end.

They're also going to cut DJ Alexander, another 2015 5th rounder who excelled on Special Teams and blocked a punt for a score against the Raiders?

Trading DAT is certainly a possibility, as is trading Davis. If the Chiefs can get anything for either player, I'm sure they'll do it (barring injury).

I can certainly see Roches-Nunez on the Practice Squad, as he was a 6th rounder in 2015. The addition of Chris Jones makes him expendable but I doubt they give up on him altogether. He's raw and has ideal size.

As for linebackers, I see Moses on the roster before Nicolas, who was a 6th rounder that played in a 4-3 in college. Unless he just destroys in preseason, he seems like a PS candidate. If a team wants to sign him to their 53, I could see Moses being cut but if not, Moses experience should win out.

Stevie Brown hasn't done a damn thing since 2014. By all accounts, Marcus Cooper has been moved to Safety, so I can't understand why he's being listed as a Cornerback, nor can I understand how they'd keep him over a guy they just drafted in DJ White, who likely would be picked up on waivers and not make it to the PS.

As usual, Teicher has an odd take.

If all three QB's perform well in preseason, I'll bet dollars to donuts that one of them ends up on IR.
