The one potential windfall to signing Whitner is that he would not work into the compensatory pick formula for next year as he was released. I don't believe however that he comes cheap, as he was slated to make 6 million this season. He ain't taking no veteran minimum anytime soon. The guy can bring the wood, but he also misses way too much to be a dependable starter patrolling the back half of a secondary.

No I'm simply stating that Whitner is overrated. For every great hit and tackle he makes, there are blown assignments and bad angles that stats don't account for. Fans that vote for the Pro-Bowl see stats, and usually apart from knowing the players from the team they root for, most have only a casual knowledge of the game to game performance of said players.
Whitner is not terrible, but nobody should be shocked he was released. His 2015 "stats" look decent enough, but closer inspection of his real gameplay shows he was not overly sound.

Surely you aren't suggesting that a Pro Bowl bid is an accurate measure of player ability. Guys get in every year that don't belong.

It's not that every pro bowl player is bad, it that not every one of them is good.
