So, can anybody school me up on televisions?

These new ultraHD 4k curve televisions, are they worth the money? I almost bought a Samsung today, but I backed out. I hear that the curve may be a gimmick?

Any info on these tv's would be great. I figured CP would have some info.

My buddy owns an A/V company. His recommendation when we discussed it a couple of weeks ago:

Wait on 4K unless you just absolutely want it. There is very very little content and won't be for quite a while, and they will just get cheaper. He said while resolution will be important on larger tvs when viewed at the right distance, the 4K colors will be the wow factor.

The curve is a huge gimmick and will go the way of 3D.

gimmick, 4k is nice, but there is not point spending the extra money on it right now.

Just imagine if you bought bluray early on, that is what 4k is in still. Hell bluray have still not supplanted dvd. Maybe in a couple more years it will.

As for Vizio, they are great. I hold them right up there with Samsung, and their cost jumps them above sony to me.

I have said it before and I will say it again. Unless your current TV dies, now is a very bad time to buy a new TV: HDCP 2.2 is required for 4k blu ray. all these cheap 4k tvs dont even have it. Not to mention HDR if you want the real deep colors. Factor in ATSC 3.0 is coming out in a few years... now is a pretty dumb time to buy a TV if you dont need one.

I have a four-year-old Vizio 55 and it's terrific. Paid $1,000 for it at Walmart, you can now get it for about $600. I won't replace it until it dies.

I have a 48" Vizio LCD TV purchased 2009 in our kid's playroom. The picture is awesome and it's definitely seen more hours of use than all of our other five TV's combined.

We also have a 37" LED and a 42" LED purchased in 2012 and they're great. The only issue I have with the LED's is that due to their physical nature of being less than 2" thick, they require a soundbar and subwoofer for maximum enjoyment.

I recently got a 70" Vizio 4k, and it's pretty incredible. Comparing pictures to other brands, I definitely preferred the Vizio.

Blu ray became the standard more than 5 year ago. When you can rent the discs at a Redbox since the late 2000s it isn't a new format that isn't being used.

4k content isn't that rare. Netflix and Amazon are really putting out some great looking 4k content. Even more limited in content is HDR which I think is a bigger deal that the resolution.

HDR is the buzzword that should be coming up soon with TVs and was introduced with few flagship TVs last year from Samsung and Sony. Might be more of an impact than 4k.

Just pay attention to the model. As someone else said, Visio has some really good model lineups, just check out cnet.

Here's what it really comes down to, TimBone: Purchase what you can afford.

Once you get the TV home, regardless of brand or fancy descriptors, it's going to look amazing.

Make sure its 4k and that you sit 1 foot in front of it so that the picture looks downright amazing.
