Ten Things About Today's Game

Ten Things About Today's Game

10. Well guys, today is one of those games that makes you question why we chose to follow this franchise as our chosen team. What a lousy weekend. There are no excuses today. Perfect weather. Full house home crowd. Early lead. And we're treated to another second half unforgivable meltdown. There's plenty of failure to point out and to pass out again this week, as this was as much of a team loss as the Denver game was. Charles fumbled away that game, and today the season was pretty much carried off the field with him and his torn ACL. We have nobody else who can make a difference, and that's a fact.

9. The thing that got me in this game was how similar both these teams are on both sides of the ball. The Bears are a bad team. Their offensive play selection is almost a mirror image of our dink and dunk game. Matt Forte is their version of Charles, and he was their go to guy in the clutch today. Cutler is a terrible quarterback. He seems detached from his team, he has a don't give a flying **** attitude on the field, and yet he's the guy today to rally his team inside two minutes to win. The Bears won't go far this year; today was probably their highlight win for the entire season. The Chiefs laid down once Charles went out injured. The Bears had the ball almost the entire first quarter. I think they had the ball for over 13 minutes. Chiefs had one offensive possession, where Andy threw the ball three straight times (including on third and one on this play:

View My Video

Smith was off target all day long, and I mean all day long. He couldn't even hit check downs. Every ball thrown long was overthrown. His performance was miserable. There's no way to sugar coat it. He was miserable. Cutler coughed up a fumble for a TD and still outplayed Smith. Chiefs defense was on the field for most of the first half, which really didn't bite them in the second half, because we rotate our line and couldn't get a pass rush the entire fourth quarter even with fresh guys. Everybody just disappeared like last week in Cincy.

8. Let's look where the game momentum changed. Chiefs are up 17-6, driving inside the Bears Red Zone. First play, Charles tries to cut on his right knee, the knee buckles, he falls to the ground untouched, obviously a blown knee.
View My Video
They carried Charles off the field down the steps right below where I sit. They literally had to carry him down the stairs. He couldn't put any weight at all on his right leg, and he was in a lot of pain. Has to be a torn ACL or worse. Has to be. In any case, OK, how do the Chiefs respond? On second down, Smith throws to Kelce. At least they take a shot at the end zone, but Alex is nowhere close to Kelce, as the ball is behind him and way off target:
View My Video
On Third Down, they try a little swing pass to West, who is headed out of bounds anyway, not even near the goal line, and Smith can't hit him. Another terrible pass and a terrible call. So now it's fourth down.
View My Video
So they trot Santos out for a field goal which would be shorter than an extra point; Grubbs blocks the wrong guy, Bear guy comes in clean, attempt is blocked, and instead of 20-6 it's now 17-6 and the Bears have some hope.
View My Video

7. After that, the offense goes into three and out mode for the rest of the game. They literally pissed themselves. Smith was looking down receivers, almost got Kelce killed over the middle. When they did try to run the ball, we got run blocking like this from Stephenson, who does an Ole' on the linebacker, and Davis gets destroyed:
View My Video

6. I don't mean to beat a dead horse on the defensive Houdini act, but WHERE THE **** was the pass rush in the last three minutes of the game? KC had two sacks; one by Howard to cause the fumble in the first quarter for a defensive TD, and one by Bailey. Again, Justin Houston and his huge salary disappeared. He wanted JJ Watt Money, we're getting JJ Walker minus the dyno-mite. In the fourth quarter, the Bears weren't even doubling Houston, he was effectively blocked one on one. Nothing from Hali, nothing from Dee Ford, nothing from DJ, nothing from Devito, nothing from Poe. I think Poe is playing hurt. When he comes to the sidelines he's moving really stiff, and I think his back is still a mess. Our linebackers had a total of SEVEN tackles today.

5. They dressed Nelson (our third round DB pick) but he saw very little action. Peters got a critical PI on a 3rd and 10 with less than two minutes left that set up Chicago's go ahead TD. On the play that Forte actually scored on, if you watch the play, it's a pick play. Smith is watching the receiver who sets the pick, Forte gets a step on Abdullah coming around the pick and the ball is put right on the money -Unlike Alex Smith who couldn't put the ball on any body at any time.
View My Video

4. KC was 35% on third down, which sucks. What sucks more is that's 9% higher than their season average coming into this game. You are not going to win converting 35% on third down. The Bears offense is awful, and they managed to convert 42% on third down, including a screen pass on a third and 18 in the first half. Chiefs gave up three sacks today, which is better than five like last week, but Alex is getting sacked taking three step drops. He's shell shocked. It's obvious.

3. The only special teams contribution was Colquitt's punting. He's been on a pro bowl tear. Of course, he's getting a lot of practice, KC punted seven times today after all the three and outs. Dave Toub's guys are not helping with field position on punt returns. Both kickers were booming kickoffs out of the end zone, and I think most kickers in the NFL are doing that now, so opportunities for kickoff returns are becoming kind of a thing of the past. You have to make your field position on punt returns, and the Chiefs have been lousy at returns this year.

2. So it all comes back to coaching and play calling again. This offense only scored ten points, and after Charles went out didn't sniff the end zone. Hell, the Bears even conceded a field goal at the end of the first half, playing prevent at the goal line and letting KC get a chip shot. So they basically spotted us three points. If you have a 1-3 team come into your house, and you have a 14-point lead at home, and you can't score a point in the entire second half, you deserve to lose. There was no five turnovers like against Denver. There was no Hall of Fame QB cutting us up like against Green Bay. There was no failure in the red zone like at Cincy. This was just a team quitting on offense after their best player went out injured. So it goes to heart; and lack of heart goes to coaching and motivating your team. It was obvious that both of these teams were kind of looking at each other to see who wanted it more. Turned out in the fourth quarter, the Bears made plays, and the Chiefs played not to lose, and tried to run clock. And as usual, the defense didn't have enough skill to pull it off. You have to point the finger once again at Bad Andy. This loss is inexcusable.

1. What now? Those of you who were saying "This is a Playoff Team," well, this bunch is 1-4 and a team that is winless at home, so sorry, they won't go to the playoffs. And since we have one less home game, that's not helping one bit. This team also lost a guy who in years past has been over 50% of their total offense. Hopefully not for the entire season, but the severity of the injury looks like it will cost at least half the remaining year. This ain't an ankle sprain. This one looks like surgery. And this team has an alleged leader that his team mates clearly have no faith in. How could they? I don't know if any of you noticed, but Smith was sitting on the defensive bench for most of the fourth quarter, by himself, and none of this team mates, not a single one, came over to talk with him the whole fourth quarter. I saw that same thing with Bono, and Grbac, and Huard when they were stinkin' it up. You can just tell when the team is distancing themselves from the QB. My pal Gary was telling me that he believes we're stuck with Smith for at least one more year after this one, because if the Chiefs cut him, it's $25 mill against the salary cap. I don't know if that's true or not, but I do know that when the Chiefs pay a QB, they keep throwing him out there until the bitter end (like Grbac) or until he gets hurt (like Huard). So, there are no silver linings after this mess. The Vikings had a bye week, so they've got two weeks to rest up and prepare for KC. I'm sure Adrian Peterson can't wait to take a crack at us, and Bridgewater will be very happy to see our secondary with a rookie corner and your guess is as good as mine at nickel back. A 1-5 start now looks likely.

And KU, K-State and Mizzou all lost yesterday, and the Royals lost 4-2 in Houston. So all in all, it's been a pretty miserable weekend.

We haven't had much of a pass rush all season. Hali has lost a step. Dee Ford is worthless was worthless pick to begin with Dorsey should not get a pass for drafting him he should be answering for that kind of draft pick.

Houston my boy fell down couldn't stay on his feet and pretty sloppy that's embarrassing and has no excuse for the money he is making. ****.

What to ****ing do?

Gaines is out, Charles is out. Let's just tank this season. Trade away Daniel for a 2nd-3rd round pick and surrender a future 4th/5th. And pray we can build an elite defense for next season behind our strong front. Draft OL again (Sigh) and prepare West to be a split carries guy with Jamaal.

Plenty of options out there to bring in a WR2, such as Sanu or Jones which Bengals can't afford both in free agency.

Silver linings from today: The Jamaal injury is early in the season so he'll have 10 months to recover, we'll get a soft schedule next season, and we are set for a low draft pick.

'just like that' is when it became apparent to the spectator. This season was done whenever Reid decided to instill this shitty perpetual 'oh well, gotta do better tomorrow' mindset.

Adrian Peterson is going to set a new single-game rushing record next week.

32 carries for 549 yards with 7 TDs.

Shouldn't be hard. If Cutler can juke DJ twice, Adrian Peterson will make him **** his pants by just looking at him. Ramik and Berry are our only hope

I watched until JC went down, knew it over then and went outside to do yard work. Came inside long enough to see it come to fruition. Next week looks like sealing the house up before winter gets here.

I dont know what Nelson could have possibly showed that made the coaches think that Tyvon Branch would be better in man to man coverage than him.

All i can think of was that one play in pre season where Nelson got beat for a deep post

You're pretty much right on especially on Smith being shell shocked. The phantom footsteps have infiltrated his psyche. Unfortanately as chiefs fans we've seen this song and dance repeatedly and things never get better for our qb's once it gets to this point. It's going to be a long year if alex stays healthy.
