Yea pretty much.

Actually, if the internet and social media had been around during his reign, he most likely would not have lasted as long as he did.

Isn't it pretty much agreed upon by everyone that the team buried itself in the silt during his reign? I mean, on 810 they used to blast Allard Baird by comparing him to Steadman.

It sounds like he was a great businessman and achieved a lot in his life, but not every endeavor is a success for even the greatest men.

He was Lamar Hunt's room mate in college. He was really good at stuff like planning the Arrowhead construction and building Worlds of Fun, but didn't know shit about football. Once Stram left, he ran the team into the ground for 15 years until King Carl took over. Steadman was in charge during the 1983 Blackledge draft. They didn't take Marino because Mackovic was a big God-Squader, and Marino would curse at a receiver if he dropped the ball. So we got Sackledge instead.

I suffered with Steadman for years and years and years. Pissed me off when they put him on the ring of honor. They just did it because of tenure, because Lamar never wanted to fire anybody.

He was basically a suit. Long career with the Chiefs, but not much more than a suit.

I lived through his ineptness from around 1973 to 1987. That span of Chiefs suck would have killed most of you young guys dead. Imagine 15 years of Pioli, with no change in sight.

Maybe that will give you a little feel for what Chiefs life was like with Steadman in charge.

Yup, I endured those sad years too. As George said, Steadman was light on football knowledge; his emphasis was on making money for Lamar. Not to disparage the guy, but to me, he always came off as stand-offish and rather arrogant. He and Lamar struck me as two rather different types. Lamar was more of a "regular"....heck, Lamar and I had a chat in old Municipal Stadium before a pre-season game while he was wandering around in his shirt sleeves. Steadman was never seen in anything but a very expensive suit.....and definitely not much for fan interaction.

Just didn't care for the guy although my heart definitely goes out to his family at this time. RIP.

He's pretty much just a name to me. He was involved in a lot of Chiefs ineptitude, but had the fortune of doing it in an era when the only coverage was fawning newspapers and TV stations. So I guess I'll just shrug and wish his family well.

He was the GM for both Super Bowl teams, was he not? I know he eventually took on the role of president but I thought he was the GM during the 60s too.

Steadman's focus was business. Stram was the football brain behind the championships and many of the key players were found and signed by Lloyd Wells, the legendary scout.

He was the person that rightfully was to blame for the Chiefs run of pitful years on the field. Lamar has some blame for keeping him in that position. And don't get me started on his being on the ring of honor at Arrowhead. Just what exactly did he do to warrant such an honor?
I thought he was pretty good back in the prime days?
