Let's talk about a few of the interesting matchups we'll see in 2015.

It's a dead slow time for football discussion right now and I figured this would be a good way of sparking up some Chiefs talk. Maybe draw in some rivals for a little heated discussion. I have some free time and thought this would be a fun way to waste some of it.

The upcoming schedule will give us some really interesting matchups that will play a huge role in the success of the team in those games. Let's talk about a few of them. So the OP doesn't get super long (and therefore unreadable) I'll be going week by week in looking at what I see as the pivotal matchups each game are.

Here we go

Week 1

Justin Houston -vs- Derek Newton

This has a potential to get really ugly for Newton and if Houston is there, he's gonna flat out destroy this poor guy. I wouldn't be surprised to see 50 start the year with a monster game of 3+ sacks in the opener. Mallett is a statue that's holds the ball too long and our secondary should be able to blanket their receivers. If the rest of the defense is at full strength, Houston is gonna be a destroyer of worlds in Houston.

Marcus Peters -vs- Deandre Hopkins

This is gonna be interesting if Sean Smith is indeed suspended week 1. It's a great matchup that will show us what we have in the kid and I think he is up to the task right away. I bet Peters has already watched a bunch of film on Hopkins and knows how he's gonna attack him. I can't wait to watch these two battle. It's gonna be worth the ticket price. I'll be SHOCKED if Peters doesn't get his first pick in the opener.

JJ Watt/Jadaveon Clowney -vs- Eric Fisher/ Ben Grubbs

If Clowney is ready to go, this could be a monstrous test for our guys week 1. JJ Watt makes a living putting guys on sportscenter and Clowney is penciled in at ROLB behind him. If Clowney is healthy and focused, it could get scary if Fisher isn't improved a lot since last year. It will be interesting to see if they need to have a TE help and keep Sherman back to chip or not as the game goes on. All in all, if the OL can do their job against that front 7 (hopefully with a little help by Romeo of not bringing the heat and forcing Clowney into coverage all game) I think we win this game cause our defense should hold their offense in check all day.

Jeremy Maclin -vs- Kareem Jackson

This should be a good test for both players. Jackson really came on last year and is a solid corner that Maclin will need to be on the top of his game to make plays against. They have similar long speed, so Maclins gonna need to beat him with precise routes to win individual matchups. If Maclin can have a productive day (a lot of that depends on the OLs ability to block that front 7), we should be able to
Score enough to win.

Other note able matchups:

Allen Bailey -vs- Xavier Su'a-Filo
Phillip Gaines -vs- Cecil Shorts

Last years opener was an anomaly.

No DAT, Kelce learning the ropes, no Bowe, no Wilson,DJ and DeVito tore their Achilles and Jeff Allen suffered a season ending injury.

Feel better about the depth this year.

Yeah, with Andy Reid and Alex Smith I'm pretty sure that's our game plan for weeks 2 through 16 as well.

JJ Watt is the most versatile D-Lineman in the league.

If I'm Romeo, I watch the Chiefs preseason tape and find out who the weakest link on the Chiefs O-Line and match Watt up against that guy.

Rodgers will hold onto the ball looking for a big okay down field.

Houston could potentially have a big game there.

Watt moves along the line crazy so it doesn't really matter, but doesn't he start at LDE?

After traveling to Houston to play the opener, we have a short week to prepare for the game many of us see as the most important of the year for us. I think we will beat Houston by more than one score and will be coming home to prepare on a short week for the biggest mental hurdle of the year for this team. In some of the recent matchups with them, the Chiefs seemed defeated before the game started, in others we had every opportunity to beat them in crunch time and came up a little short. I think this is the year we come into the game prepared to get a victory and follow through. If they can do that, it could really catapult them to much higher confidence in their ability to beat other teams as the year goes on. This ones gonna have monstrous matchups everywhere you look, but I'll highlight a few.

Here we go

Week 2 against Denver

Phillip Gaines -vs- Emmanuel Sanders

HUGE test for Gaines, here. He faces one of the NFLs best route runners and won't have the luxury of bracketing him due to the teams other weapons. Gaines did well in this matchup last year as a rookie and has come into this year looking like he can cover anybody, or so we've read anyway. Sanders can beat you a number of ways and if Gaines isn't up to the challenge, this matchup can hurt our chances to win this one.

Marcus Peters -vs- Demarius Thomas

Oh boy! Can you say HEAVYWEIGHT FIGHT? Seriously, I can't wait to see this one. I am assuming Sean Smith is out the first 2 weeks for suspension and that Peters draws opponents top receiver in listing this matchup, but it would be nice if we only lose Sean for the opener cause we can use him here.

Their run game -vs- our front 7

This is probably gonna be the tale of the game because I can see them trying to pound the ball for 200 yards on us if we can't stop it. Getting DJ and Devito back helps, but this D really needs to step it up. If Sutton doesn't have a solid plan for shutting down their running game, we might as well not show up. Hopefully, our front 7 can find ways to exploit an OL that's missing a minimum of 3 starters from last year. All 3 were very good players. When you're signing the Ryan Harris' of the world out of desperation after Clady tears his acl, it's not a sign that you have confidence in your OL. Let's hope we can play sound football against the run. You know Kubiak is gonna pound that rock.

Our pass rush -vs- their OL

This should be a game changer. With Denver having 3 new starters on their OL, at least one being a rookie and Arrowhead packed and ready to keep it absurdly loud, there will be opportunities for big hits on Manning and they need to do exactly that as much as they can. They need to pay Denver back for that shot Von Miller took on Alex Smith last year. Houston on either Ryan Harris or a rookie is gonna be hard to block. He should be able to be very disruptive. Hali, Bailey, Poe, Ford and DJ should all be able to help take apart that OL. If the coverage holds up, Mannings going down.

Travis Kelce -vs- Denver's ILBs/Safeties

Big mismatch here. They simply don't have a guy that should be able to matchup with Travis all game without giving up huge opportunities elsewhere. He should have a monster game. I wouldn't be shocked to see him have 100yds and a couple scores.

Fisher/Stephenson/Allen -vs- Von Miller/Demarcus Ware/Shane Ray

Another huge test for our guys on the edge in week 2, and with a short week to prepare. I don't like this matchup AT ALL. I think that if we lose this one, it will be because we couldn't stop their pass rush to make use of our receiving threats. The investment is there and this is exactly the kind of game that Stephenson/Allen can start to earn contract extensions in by showing the ability to block top tier defenders.

What, against the Texans? Nah, we'll have a chance. How the hell are they going to score on us? Run Arian Foster 50 times?
