The fire TV seems snappy as hell. That car game was like 1.5gb download and rivals a gaming system game. It like outrun need for speed ish. Fun as hell. I will have to look in to the Xbmc thing

I'm thinking about getting a chromecast.

Been buying Apple loyally since 1988. In this case, I bought a Roku because it's cheaper and I watch very little video.

The real differences don't come out as much until you cut the cord entirely. They're all pretty similar if all you need are the major services, but once you start using it for EVERYTHING, the list of needs gets pretty long in a hurry. My Roku apps list at the moment:
  • Netflix
  • Hulu Plus
  • SlingTV
  • Plex
  • Tablo
  • Vudu
  • Amazon Instant Video
  • Spotify
  • YouTube
  • Pandora
  • Vimeo
  • NHL Gamecenter Live
  • Smithsonian
  • PBS
  • Comedy Dynamics
  • Google Play
  • Vevo
  • (and a handful of random stuff no one has ever heard of)

I've been thinking of getting a Roku. What's the difference between the box and the stick?

I've had a Roku for a few years, the little box. Works great. We wore out the "OK" button on the remote and I did finally get an all-in-one remote a few months ago.

Their comparison chart really does a pretty good job of pointing out the differences:

https://www.roku.com/products/compare

The stick is great if you want something to hide behind a TV completely invisibly, but it's not near as fast a device as the Roku 2 or Roku 3 (and I don't really see a good reason to buy a Roku 1 at all these days). The difference between the 2 and 3 is pretty much the remote - IR for the 2 and radio for the 3, plus the 3 has remote audio listening and voice search.

IMO, if you're looking for one to go with your main TV in the house, it's worth a little extra to get the 2 or 3. The stick makes a great option for a less-used TV in a bedroom.

I have a Roku 1 (I think, cheapest one available at the time) that I bought several years ago. What is the difference that would make it worth upgrading do you think?

Which car game? Have you tried the old school fighter plane game? Damn hard to fly...

A Miracast dongle looks like it can do anything the Chromecast, Roku, or Fire tv can do.

I just mean that I wouldn't buy one today for $50 when the Stick is the same price. The biggest difference you would see, though, is speed. The 3 and the 2015 2 are way faster than the old ones.

If you're willing to devote a computer to it, sure.

Smartphone or Tablet will work. Provided they have Miracast/DLNA capabilities, which, pretty much all do.
