On the day franchise tags were announced I was pondered a deal that would send Houston and Alex Smith and the Chiefs '15 1st and 2nd rounders to Tennessee for their '15 1st, 2nd and 3rd rounders. Then KC would flip that pick to Philly so Chip Kelly could get Mariota at the expense of his 2015 1st and 2nd rounders, a 2016 1st and 2nd round picks and Nick Foles.
Tennessee gets stability at QB and addresses a pass rushing need with Houston, which keeps them in relative contention in the AFC South. Kelly's duck obsessed ass gets Mariota, while KC gets to move back in the 1st round while moving up in the 2nd, picking up additional 2nd and 3rd round picks and getting a QB familiar with what Reid wants to do on offense while getting a future 1st round pick for firepower should a better QB come along in 2016 (or 2017) and offloading Smith's bad contract and ensuring Houston doesn't wind up on a divisional rival on the assumption he wants absolutely nothing to do with Kansas City.

Meh, our playoff game he had his greatest performance. He didn't finish the final drive but he played extremely well. He did, in fairness to him, play with a dogshit of an offense

I'll point out these trades aren't exactly of equal "value" (assuming you accept the logic behind these moves) and will assert that you can balance things out a bit by having KC swap 3rd rounders with Tennessee (thus KC is at the top of the 2nd and 3rd rounds, with extra 2nd and 3rd rounders from the trade with Philly and a likely compensation pick respectively. Further, KC could theoretically give D'A Thomas to Philadelphia and possibly a late '15 pick (ideally a round where KC also has a comp pick) to lessen the blow from losing the top heads of their drafts in 2015 and 2016. Anyway, the swapped and extra second day picks gives KC the flexibility to take the likes of Dorsett/Hardy/Lockett before someone else while keeping some 1st round talent that falls past 32 in play. For more Madden-esque fun, think about flipping Poe to Houston so he can reunite with Romeo.

Abso-Freakin-Lutely...
I get pick #5 this year, a 1st next year and RG3 who I'd owe nothing guaranteed and a 3.2 million salary. They get Houston, who would net 2 first anyhow, and Chase Daniel, who's 4.8 million I want to unload anyhow to gain 3.8 million in cap space. Damn, not bad. I'd then turn around and promptly trade RG3 to the highest bidder, and I'm willing to bet some QB starving team would give up a 2nd round pick. So, I could have what amounts to likely 2 firsts and a second for a player that's franchised and a player I want to cut? ****ing brilliant. This is why it will only work in Madden. |

While my scenario isn't likely for plenty of reasons -namely the idea that the Chiefs could beat Philly to the punch or even make a better deal with Tennessee at all-, it's at least more logical than what happened in Draft Day because it's a series of planned moves by the KC GM (in this case, me) that gets the most value out of the draft this year and next (as I deem it) while offering demonstrable valuable to Tennessee and Philly. In the movie, it never seemed that what played out from beginning to end was what Costner had intentionally planned and instead things just dovetailed nicely for his character. This is a gripe with the story itself, not the "realism" of a fictional NFL Draft as it was shown to us in the movie (which also had pretty damning flaws, with the very.. propagandized? tone of the whole film, the whitewashing of how fans treat Goodell when he announces the draft as well as this very execution of the movie itself with stilted acting and other plot contrivances as well as the clumsily patronizing transitions from city to city (which could have been handled without the annoyingly obvious explanations and instead been more organically introduced by local sports talk radio clips or by using on-site reporters to drive the point home to the dumber portions of the audience).

How bout they just keep Houston and that top 5 defense to go along with it. I take that thank you very much. Keep Bowe stay pat and On to the offense on draft day with a gluttony of picks.

I'd do it only if it was obvious Houston didn't want to be here and wouldn't be open to a long term deal.
And I'd definitely trade with Washington. Sends him to the NFC, and with their knack for screwing up, would likely guarantee a top 10 pick next year as well. |

Again, I fathomed the deal operating under the idea that Houston would not sign a long term deal and was more than willing to sit out half the season.
