Leaving the WI frozen tundra for 4 days in Maui. Good stuff to do or go?

Any favs?

Anything/place to avoid?

How is the scuba diving?

It's currently snowing heavily in WI; winter advisory.

Not sure if the beaches are ready for my pale white legs.

Thanks

Being from there, I would happily give you any inside tips except that Maui is very what you see is what you get. All the touristy stuff is the best stuff to do on Maui. It's a great place to just chill out and relax. Have fun. Eats lots of good Hawaiian food. And please be careful of the ocean. If your not used to it, it can be a real bitch. We lose a few folks a year to currents in Hawaii.

You're traveling all the way from WI to HI and only staying 4 days? Seems like a waste.

Whales will be in full mode. I stayed at Makenna Beach last February. The whale watching was incredible.

Road to Hana is fun. Beautiful. But it's an entire day. The golf is unbelievable. Hiked with a company called "Hike Maui". Their guide was great. Did a luau on La hiana. Fished, snorkeled, longboarded.

If you're only there 4 days, you can spend one entire day in a car to Hana. Wasn't worth my time and I spent 9 days there. It was spectacular.

I'm serious. When I was in Maui in high school, my dad and I went on a bike trip through the island. Years ago they transported eucalyptus trees and planted them on the island because... I don't know. Why the **** not, I guess. But then in order to survive, eucalyptus trees need koalas to prune them. So we were told we'd be riding through this large grove of eucalyptus trees. The guide passed out the helmets, and there were a bunch of scratches on them. Kind of foreboding, but we assumed it's from people wiping out.

Not the way we thought. We got to the edge of the grove, and the guide stops us and says, "The koalas are up in the trees, and they sleep most of the day. Occasionally they'll lose control while sleeping and fall out of the trees. Just be watchful."

Everybody laughs at him, because that's adorable. Sleepy little koalas falling out of trees. And to "watch out" for them. Hah. Yeah, let's watch out for the fuzzy killer rabbit, too.

But sure enough, we're riding through, and all of a sudden, WUMP! This huge koala hits this lady on the back like a piano falling from a 10-story building. She goes down to the ground. Immediately.

I would have laughed, but I was too freaked out. If we hadn't stalled for just a second more, that would have been me getting raped by a koala bomb from the sky.
that is a great story

We have been to Maui Several times. It is one of our favorite vacation spots. There is a pretty good book called "Maui Revealed" It is an excellent guide book on where to find Waterfalls and other things that a lot of people will not see. I recommend a hike to the Nakalele Blow Hole. It is pretty awesome to see.

Another of our highlights was the bicycle ride down Haleakala at sunrise you ride from 10,000 ft elevation down to sea level. You go through four different climate zones.

You can also get pretty decent massages at the school of massage in Makawao at a very good price.

Some of our favorite places to eat are The Gazebo for Breakfast in the Napili Bay. The Flat Bread Pizza Company in Paia, The Paia Seafood Company, and the Haile Maile General store after the massage.

I would do the Road to Hana just start early (6am) and you can pick up a box lunch in Paia. If you get the book I mentioned you can use it to find some of the hidden waterfalls.

Excellent recommendation!

I too have been to Maui 3 times and would only add either golf at Wailea http://www.waileagolf.com/ or Kapalua http://www.golfatkapalua.com/index.php if you are a golfer

Snorkeling at Molokini is also a great trip for 1/2 day http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Molokini

Report from Maui:

1) There is a difference between sea whales and pool whales. The resort has a huge pool. Unfortunately, today saw only one woman that was up to CP standards. But I saw a lot of beached whales around the pool. Yuck

2) Why is it that old guys with huge guts compensate with speedo type trunks? I am going to have nightmares tonight after seeing two guys in speedos and a 150 year old woman in a mini thong walk by.

3) Then I walked by a mirror and saw a guy really out of shape with white legs who looked like a beached whale in red trunks....then realized it was me. I need to get back in shape.

4) Saw a couple of sea whales. Beautiful. Keep wanting to yell "THERE SHE BLOWS!!"

5. Spent time in Lahaina eating at Aloha Mixed Plate and staring at the banyon trees. Going to Gazebo tomorrow after a morning scuba dive.

6. Not going to do the Hana death march. 5 to 10 mph for hours would bring out my road rage. I would be ramming cars by the end of the trip.

7. Very beautiful. Starting to like Maui better than the Big Island.

The wind blowing so hard that walking the beach was like being sand blasted. Water was very strong. I could see where people could get themselves in trouble.

Hoping the water clears up so we can do a one tank swim out dive.

Being a native, what is your fav island and why?
