Hypothetical: Would you trade Alex Smith for Peyton Manning?

In this hypothetical, assume that Peyton will come back for at least one more season.

Also assume that, by giving up each player, each team rids itself of the remaining contract and picks up the tab on the other as far as cap hits are concerned.

The trade is straight up. Player for player. Contract for contract.

I want to say Peyton's cap hit will be around $20 million next year and I think Alex is somewhere around $15 million (but keep in mind that we're basically locked into having Smith here for the next two seasons if he's still on the roster come opening day of 2015).

Would you make that trade?

In the other thread I said no. Alex probably has a stronger arm at this point, won't be 39 next year, and actually has a history of performing well in the playoffs. Not that Smith is great but I'm not sure Manning is ever going to get back to a Super Bowl.

Alex has a strong history of not making the playoffs as well.

Yep. A passing league with a non passing qb. Give me anything over alex smith.

If getting Peyton manning for 1 year (which attracts good free agents) is an option for ridding of the next Matt cassel, bring it on.

I'd agree I bet Peyton probably still has a better regular season if he comes back next year. He'll find a way to make it work, just like he did this year. Probably a more run-based offense to save his arm.

With Manning you have two or three years left, and every year he's going to turn into a pumpkin earlier in the season. This year he made it, what, 12 or 13 games?

The only advantage to making a trade is that Manning will retire at some point and hopefully force you to pursue a top quarterback, whereas Alex will be slightly above average for another 6 or 7 years.

But...no. No trade.

Platoon system of Smith and Manning. Play the game manger 70% of the snaps and bring in Manning when you need some QB play. His arm might have some snap if you limited his play.

Hypothetical: Would you trade Alex Smith for Peyton Manning?

In my short-sighted view Id say yes.

We'd get Manning, who is still likely a top 10 regular season QB, and rid ourselves of what looks to be a pretty hampering contract with a guy that isn't likely to take us beyond the Divisional Round.

We likely wouldn't have to worry about Manning's arm turning into a noodle so early in the season with Jamaal and Knile. There's more talent between the two of them than the Broncos backfield has seen since Terrell Davis.

Plus we'd likely be able to draw some bigger name free agents (Cobb, anyone?) while maximizing the potential of the guys that we already have. Kelce and Bowe instantly become 1,000+ yard 10+ TD guys and Albert Wilson and DAT probably take more than a few drags and screens to the house.

On the flip side, this isn't a good year for us to be riding a 1 year rental. We've got a late round pick and no QB heir apparent on the roster.

I'm assuming Manning retires after 2015 and we'd basically be scrambling to find a QB yet again.

Matt Cassel thought Peyton looked like shit today. Why would any of you want him on the team at this point in his career?

Would I rather have a 1-year window to win a Super Bowl, or a QB that didn't throw a TD to a WR for an entire season in a pass-happy league?

No offense, but what a stupid ****ing question.

doesn't a single season of Manning cost about 50% of Alex Smith's entire contract?
