Lockheed says makes breakthrough on fusion energy project
Lockheed says makes breakthrough on fusion energy project
(Reuters) - Lockheed Martin Corp said on Wednesday it had made a technological breakthrough in developing a power source based on nuclear fusion, and the first reactors, small enough to fit on the back of a truck, could be ready for use in a decade. Tom McGuire, who heads the project, said he and a small team had been working on fusion energy at Lockheed's secretive Skunk Works for about four years, but were now going public to find potential partners in industry and government for their work. Initial work demonstrated the feasibility of building a 100-megawatt reactor measuring seven feet by 10 feet, which could fit on the back of a large truck, and is about 10 times smaller than current reactors, McGuire told reporters. In a statement, the company, the Pentagon's largest supplier, said it would build and test a compact fusion reactor in less than a year, and build a prototype in five years. In recent years, Lockheed has gotten increasingly involved in a variety of alternate energy projects, including several ocean energy projects, as it looks to offset a decline in U.S. and European military spending. Lockheed's work on fusion energy could help in developing new power sources amid increasing global conflicts over energy, and as projections show there will be a 40 percent to 50 percent increase in energy use over the next generation, McGuire said. If it proves feasible, Lockheed's work would mark a key breakthrough in a field that scientists have long eyed as promising, but which has not yet yielded viable power systems. The effort seeks to harness the energy released during nuclear fusion, when atoms combine into more stable forms. "We can make a big difference on the energy front," McGuire said, noting Lockheed's 60 years of research on nuclear fusion as a potential energy source that is safer and more efficient than current reactors based on nuclear fission. Lockheed sees the project as part of a comprehensive approach to solving global energy and climate change problems. Compact nuclear fusion would produce far less waste than coal-powered plants since it would use deuterium-tritium fuel, which can generate nearly 10 million times more energy than the same amount of fossil fuels, the company said. Ultra-dense deuterium, an isotope of hydrogen, is found in the earth's oceans, and tritium is made from natural lithium deposits. It said future reactors could use a different fuel and eliminate radioactive waste completely. McGuire said the company had several patents pending for the work and was looking for partners in academia, industry and among government laboratories to advance the work. Lockheed said it had shown it could complete a design, build and test it in as little as a year, which should produce an operational reactor in 10 years, McGuire said. A small reactor could power a U.S. Navy warship, and eliminate the need for other fuel sources that pose logistical challenges. U.S. submarines and aircraft carriers run on nuclear power, but they have large fission reactors on board that have to be replaced on a regular cycle. "What makes our project really interesting and feasible is that timeline as a potential solution," McGuire said. http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/...0I41EM20141015 |

"We have run out of ideas how to get this thing to work so we need to recruit better engineers. Anyone please send resume with cover letter to skunk works. Thank you"

Oil will still be used for cars, plastics, pharmaceuticals....it won't be till a long ass time until someone builds one of these things small enough, efficient enough, and cost efficient enough to fit into your shitty chevy. If they could use it to replace coal electrical power plants tho that would be awesome

This is what causes the apocalypse. Bank on it. Fusion creates zombies, I guarantee it.

But it remains a theoretical work in progress. They are presently fabricating a machine they think will achieve their objectives, but have not replicated their projected results to date, so far as I know.

Whether or not fusion becomes the world's #1 energy resource, it should help to curb the use of fossil fuels and our usage of Middle Eastern oil.
I call that a Win-Win. |

It's potential hasn't been in question since we gained understanding of what happens in the Sun. It's practicality remains in question yet.

My son is studying quanta. I've picked up a little from osmosis. Quantum energy will be the final energy source. Quanta exists in every atom. All matter is made of atoms. If we can harness these quanta, the possibilities are unlimited.Teleportation, warp drive, Power for everything. The easiest, non tech, explanation for quanta's I could find on a web search.................. Quantum means a very small speck of something, in this case, an elemental unit of energy. It turns out that quanta (several small specks of energy) exist in the background of all atoms and show themselves even at the coldest of temperatures, zero degrees Kelvin (or absolute zero) the lowest of all possible energy states. This is demonstrated when all matter has been removed and nothing is left to make any motion, in essence, nothing should move. And yet, these infinitesimally small packets of energy exist, sometimes as particles and sometimes as waves. And this energy fills the space or void. Now, where do you and I come in? We, and everything around us is made up of atoms. If the foundation of all atoms is this energy field, then we have this energy within us. Through and through. Everywhere. In fact, there is no beginning or end to it, where one atom starts and another stops. The energy is continuous. And it turns out that this energy, when it moves in waves, has no boundaries, not in space, and not in time. So, you can consider yourself tethered, if you will, by this energy field in the background of every atom in your body, to everything that exists, has existed and will exist. You really have no physical boundary when it comes to this energy field. And in fact, you are entangled energetically to everything else, to everyone else, in the physical world we see, and the non-physical world we don’t see, as in our consciousness, or more simply, our thoughts.

I think I've mentioned this before but I know a few very high level engineers that have built power plants worldwide that have both said that had the proper resources been allocated to solve the cold fusion issue, it would have been implemented 20 years ago. |
