Yeah, my wife calls the adopters vet, etc to make sure they keep their pets up to date on shots, and stuff like that. They fill out application, and have to meet certain requirements in order to adopt thru her.

Very common. People get puppies, love them, then neglect them, don't train them at all, then dump when they become adult dogs and the work starts and the dog has behavioral issues because it is left outside all day, to walked, etc.

Most people don't want a dog. Most people want a stuffed animal that animates on command and goes back into stasis on command.

I have found that a dog that is inside with you all the time, gets attention and just a bit of exercise, and of course the basic training, is almost always going to be a well behaved, happy animal.

But it takes work. People don't want to work. They want a stuffed animal that becomes a toy an hour or 2 a week. Or they want a stuffed animal that guard barks at strangers, but is out of sight and out of mind all the rest of the time.

Its sad. You end up with millions and millions of dogs destroyed. And cats, etc.

I recently had my dying 16 years old cat destroyed. The folks at the shelter were euphoric. I guess it had been months since they saw someone turn in a cat dying of natural causes instead of having to put down a healthy, vital, young cat.
