View Poll Results: Would you swap our 2015 1st for a 2014 2nd?
Yes. I would trade with any team. 4 4.94%
Perhaps, depending on where the pick lies in the 2nd. I'm not terribly interested in taking Seattle's pick 16 19.75%
Probably not. I'd need to see who was available when we made the deal, but I'm leaning towards no 28 34.57%
No. Too risky. You have no clue where we'll pick or what kind of talent will be there 33 40.74%

Would you trade 2015's 1st rounder for a 2014 2nd round pick?

A lot of people (most vocally BossChief) are observing that because of all the underclassmen coming into this draft, there is a logjam of talent extending all the way from the middle of the 1st to the early 4th round. The Chiefs only have 2 picks in the top 100. Also, that is almost sure to figure into a somewhat lousy 2015 class.

Let's say the Chiefs make a deal with the 49ers to get their Alex Smith pick back in exchange for our 2015 1st. Picks at 23, 56, and 87 will allow us to potentially fill all of the remaining roster holes or pick up an incredible talent at a future position of need like CB, DL... hell, even QB.

The possibilities are endless in this scenario. Maybe Dorsey lands a trade down at 23 and picks up more picks. Or maybe a guy like Clinton-Dix or Beckham is available at 1. That 2nd round pick of ours now gives us the freedom to target our FS, passrusher (I'm a huge fan of Jeremiah Attaochu), or another bottom first round talent who is bound to fall into our laps in this deep class.

It gives us a ton more freedom at the top of the draft where we really need it. That's why I'd advocate for it.

EDIT: And as htismaqe pointed out, we've got a crap ton of comp picks in 2015 anyway. It's not like we're going to be starved for rookies or anything.

Poll forthcoming

Hell, you could argue that he "gave up" his R1 pick in 2013 as well.

I don't see why you are hating him for that? I mean Alex was very good last year. Plus, who else was he gonna get to play QB.

I think he wanted to draft a QB, but there wasn't one available that year.

Yep. That was just my opinion. I would estimate most here would say the Chiefs should make that deal based on perceived talent level coming out this year based on next year. Plus, just as a society we are not patient people we want everything now!

I think picking @23 the Chiefs can trade down and pick up a 2nd this year.

Prolly not. With the Chiefs schedule this year and not getting any better in FA, I can see them drafting in the #7-#11 range in 2015.

Yes....although I would hope for a pick in the top half of the 2nd round.

I would expect us to have a middle of the first pick next year, so no, I would not trade that for a 2nd this year, unless it was at the very top of the 2nd or something.

Even then I'd have a hard time doing it. The chances you get a 5+ year starter seem much better in the middle of the 1st.

I don't hate him for that.

I think it was a counter-intuitive move, especially given his penchant for wanting to build through the draft.

It's quite simple.

If Alex Smith is a stop-gap because you're building through the draft, you could have had a guy like Jason Campbell for free.

If Alex Smith is the long-term answer, then you're not building through the draft, you're trading picks for established players.

Both can't be true simultaneously.

How about the Rams? They have two high 1st round picks and two high 2nd round picks. Maybe they'd like to trade #37 or #44 for our 1st next year.

And then starting in about February, all the talking heads will start talking about how 2015 is so bad, almost as bad as 2013.

I forgot they had two 2nds.

Is there any reason for them to give one of those up? They already have a plethora of picks in the top 50 and top 100, but it's not like you can really say they don't need them, or that their GM/Fischer is going to be willing to invest like that when his team is going to struggle to overcome the Seahawks and Niners in the division for years to come

Define long-term? Because I can see Alex being the QB in KC for 6 years.

Both can be simultaneous. Are you suggesting that he can't trade for a QB and then build most of the rest of the roster through the draft?

I don't think this is an issue of wanting everything now. I think it's an issue of seeing an opportunity and taking an advantage where it exists.

When any team makes a trade for a player like this, I'd like to think they're doing it out of strategy than impatience.
