Jason LaCanfora On Chiefs Future

Kansas City Chiefs: It's all gone horribly wrong there, there are no signs of life and I cannot imagine a way that Scott Pioli and Romeo Crennel are back next season. Owner Clark Hunt looks for hands-on people, as he is not around the team on a daily basis (which could lead to a GM like Bill Polian being the next man there). This team thought it had playoff potential and now it's jostling for the first overall pick. The fan revolt is palpable there, forcing changes.

Possible replacement: The Chiefs need to start over with a new quarterback and I can't help but wonder if Mike Sherman, who has worked closely with them and who has won at this level, gets a chance there. This hasn't been a big-paying job and I have a hard time projecting "A-list" guys there.

This guy is out in left field. Pioli is supposedly one of the highest paid GMs in football. Maybe they'll go cheaper next time but this team has never been shy about coaches or front office people. Vermeil, Herm, Al Saunders, Weis, etc.. history would say the opposite, ownership has never been afraid to go get their guy and pay him what he wants.

Yep.

Vermeil's staff was one of the highest-paid in history. Not only was Saunders making near-HC money but their quality assistants had quality assistants. At one point, they had something like 24 coaches on staff.

Why?

Pioli is the highest paid GM in the league and at the time of the hire, he was at the top of that A-List. That last sentence is stupid.

Yep.

And you would think this is an attractive spot. New GM/coach would be able to come in and make their mark immediately with a quarterback, and there are many more pieces in place than you would normally find on a 1-9 team. They shouldn't have to roll over the roster the way they did in 2009, so there's at least the outside potential here for a very fast turnaround.

This. A QB, a modern 3-4 scheme, and a decent offensive system and this is a playoff team.

Hell, this could be a playoff team NEXT YEAR.

this is what gives me hope and makes me think there should be guys lining up to be our hc next year. brian chip kelly...anyone with big nuts like todd haley but actually knows football & has enough social skills to hold a coaching staff together & connects with his players because he actually played football at some level other than on his xbox growing up

Short of having an established franchise QB, Clark will never be in a better position to attract top talent at GM and coach than he is with what could potentially be the top pick in the draft.

Clark Hunt's first and only hire was an "A-List" guy. At the time, there wasn't a more highly touted candidate. Crennel and Wies were also "A-List" hires as coordinators.

I can't believe we didn't keep him on the staff...

actually, it's totally believeable. Nevermind.

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/story/2...re-on-the-line
It hasn't been a high paying job because Pioli wanted to hire stooges he could control to follow the "Patriot Way". Let's not forget that Hunt pulled out the wallet and got the supposed A-list of A-list GM's, three time executive of the year Scott Pioli, to come here and be one of the highest paid GM's around. So I doubt money is the issue. The question will be whether Hunt throws it at a GM or at a coach.

If the intent is to clean up the organization and not have it be run by a dictatorial iron fist, then Polian is not the answer. Polian is also an older guy who wants to hand the reigns over to his son relatively soon, but I haven't heard good things about his son. I do remember Chris Polian was on the short list mentioned when we were doing our last GM search, along with Dominik and Pioli. But if the last search is any indication, Hunt is going to look for a younger guy rather than an older guy. I guess if Bill convinced Clark that Chris was the GM and he would act as a Parcells type adviser, Clark might go for it. But I think it would be a big mistake. The only way that move would have worked is if we had done it last year and managed to convince Manning to come in for a visit.

As far as Sherman, that would be horrible, but wouldn't shock me. Whoever we hire will need a strong history as a QB teacher, and that's why Miami hired Sherman. I've heard his name bantered around a few times on Petro's show. I really hope that's not something that happens...
