While this won't help you in time for Christmas, the next generation of CPU will be released first quarter of 2017. Patience could get you an i5 or i7 for a lot cheaper than they are now.

Basically what I'm waiting on until I upgrade my 5 year machine.

Waiting a month (new Intel chips set to release in Jan. 2017) to get a cheaper current gen i5 or i7 isn't really waiting that long.
