Darius Byrd/Eric Berry Tandem Possible

Reports circulating about Chiefs having an interest in Jarius Byrd after Bills wont retain him. Imagine this and a top WR 1st round?
Sounds good to me if it can be done.

So if we make room this year, cut hali and flowers next season. That will free up money for a Houston contract. This could work but I will only get excited once it says Byrd signs with chiefs.

I wouldnt want the chiefs to overpay for Jarius Byrd. He ran a 4.68 forty at his proday which is slower than Kendrick Lewis. Byrd is more quick (1.53 ten yrd split) than he is fast.

I think he "plays fast" because he has great ball skills and awareness that allows him to anticipate. That being said, speed is the chiefs major problem and I would rather the team have some fast guys like Sanders Commings [among others] compete for the starting position.

Heck, for that matter, Byrd is just 1/2 an inch taller than Flowers. Maybe the team should just look into sticking flowers back there since he likely wont be a starting outside corner for the team. If he is used mainly as a deep safety, than that would also limit some of the injuries (wear/tear) which would also allow him to be more productive.

That's great but what about Darius Byrd?

I don't think Flowers to FS would be all that bad an idea.

He's got the game for it. He's already a heady player who knows he doesn't have top end speed.
He's a very solid tackler.
It would get the most bang-for-our-buck considering his contract.

It makes more sense to me than having him cover the slot guy...

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

yup. It essentially keeps flowers on the field, limits his potential injuries, and maximizes his contract.

People talk smack about Cooper, but he had 18 passes defensed and 3 INT as a rookie!! Sean Smith has never had those numbers in any season of his career. Those 2 will likely be the starting outside corners. Commings could play nickel or dime.

its not like Flowers really excelled in the slot anyway (though transitioning from the outside which he has played his entire career was a big change for him).

I'm not sure i want a rookie FS trying to learn and start for us this year?

1. We need production NOW
2. I'm not sure i trust our defensive coaches to teach a rookie FS
3. we need leadership in our secondary to set a tone and instill confidence

switching Flower's lack of speed from CB to FS is not going to work in a single deep scheme imo

I remember years ago when Marty switched Mark Collins from corner to free safety. I think he did pretty well too.
