****Official Let's Break Down Sutton's Defense Thread****

Welp, I figure we should go ahead and start this project early.

Here are a few helpful hints!

1. Sutton has served primarily as a DC/LB for 8 years including this one.
2. He also had a stint as an OC, as well as WR/QB coach in the early 80's and a RB coach for 8 years (Hence his desire to stop the run)
3. He also served as the Ravens DC along with Rex from 06-08

What I believe from this and other data easily obtained, we're going to see an altered version of the 2-gap that we came to know and love under Romeo. Now, there are some slight variatons (such as DEs playing the 4-tech instead of the 5, the use of zone/man blitz philosophies out of base fronts, and the use of fire zones in base fronts).

Here's a wonderful link I'll provide until a certain league decides to take it down.

One thing that does concern me (and I don't know how much of this is Rex or Sutton) is the propensity to utilize 3 safety packages. They work fine if you have a fantastic front 4 and great corner play. I don't know if we're going to see Berry as the Ted as we did in Romeo's 2-3-6 but I wouldn't discount it just yet.
I think the huge difference is that the Ryan difference is going to bring a ton of blitz pressure.

The other huge difference is that the 3-4 defense was purely a 3-man front. The Ryan defense is going to mix things up a bunch at the line and run a bunch of traditional 4-3 sets. It's going to be a 3-4/4-3 hybrid. That's why the DeVito pickup is a good one.

Again, we'll see how it goes. I think our D-line is going to bring a hell of a lot more pressure than the Jets could.

I've always thought coordinators make a difference. It's not a coincidence the only year the Chiefs were successful under Pioli was the year they had two legit coordinators who were good at their job.

Because logic of convenience allows that to be completely ignored.

They ran Mangini's 2-gap defense. And it was clear that Mangini was calling the shots.

I think they make a huge difference when a team upgrades from Clancy Pendergast and Chan Gailey/Todd Haley to Romeo Crennel and Charlie Weis.

I have no reason to think that Bob Newhart can't be a respectable defensive coordinator. I think it's also fair to say that Ray Horton is a young brilliant coaching mind in this league who probably deserved a shot as a head coach. A guy like that as your coordinator can sometimes radically transform a team. All that matters for us, though, is how he does compared to Bob Newhart

If their offense can stay on the field and not turn into KC the past 2 years, that roster + Horton is going to be a nasty defense. They've got some fun tools.

Not all of them.

In fact I would say the majority of them think "LOL, Alex Smith"

The difference is that Romeo like to run a pure 2-gap. 2-gap all day long. Sutton's defense is going to mirror Rex Ryan's, in that the 3-4 will be 2-gap, but he's also going to throw a ton of 4-3 looks. So his 5-techniques have to be able to also play a conventional 4-3 tackle.

I like Rex Ryan's defense. I think the defense fell short the past few years because of talent.
My friend is a beat writer for the Jets and he insisted from the people he's talked to connected to Sutton that Sutton is running a 1-gap defense in KC.

He will mix it up with various other fronts, but the primary defense is going to be a 3-4 attacking 1 gap defense.
