For example the refit Enterprise, which was built by a different company, looked great but was apparently a giant pain in the ass to work with. ILM hated it so much that when the Enterprise was destroyed in STIII they wanted to blow up the actual studio model, and then during the making of IV they lobbied to use the Excelsior model for the Enterprise-A. |

Liked it almost as much as the reboot. Way better than Into Darkpiss. The film was really, really funny and hit most of it's marks. Managed to be nostalgic without straight ripping off any other films.
8/10 and looking forward to the next one. Only complaint was that some of the action was hard to follow (****ing shaky cam and really dark scenes) and in a few parts the bad guy's dialogue was hard to understand. I teared up when Spock broke out the photo. |

Man, I really really enjoyed it. I thought it worked. The action was good. The humor was well played. The interpersonal stuff I thought was well written and acted, and the internal struggles were well grounded and done well IMO. Nothing felt forced from my perspective.
I don't get a lot of the criticism. I didn't get a fast and furious feel to it at all. Man those movies were cheeseball. The action here felt consistent and organic. Nothing forced. I thought the story was really good. The unity theme was definitely classic Trek, as well as the no man left behind (Jahla), sacrificing yourself, unwavering bravery in the unknown and against insurmountable odds. There was definitely a lot more going on than SPLOSIONS. The biggest thing is that it didn't feel forced. Some of the stuff in the previous two felt forced. I didn't really have a problem with it. I liked both, but this one felt far more organic. It all worked. I didn't have to struggle looking past any of it. The Sulu gay thing, I thought it was tastefully done. I'm not big on gay rights or whatever, but it is very much a Rodenberry thing to do. They didn't stuff it down your throat, but it worked in the story and added some depth. Here's the deal on the constant action. If they made a real dialogue heavy character piece, it would be an indy film. And mother****ers would still shred it. They'd say "it had all been done in film whatever", or "that's ALL you could do on that budget? **** you Abrams." Or "what a boring flick the originals were better." If the originals could do the CGI they can do now, I'd bet good money there would be some damn explosions. And audiences just don't sit through extra long dialogue anymore. This film felt like Trek, and the best thing about it was that it was a good film if you'd never seen one. Well done IMO. |

I wonder how much unused film they have of scenes of him. If workable, and if the right scenes are already in the can, it might be fitting to give him a proper on screen send off? It wouldn't have to be killing off the character, though it is most likely the easiest way and most plausible resolution.

When they got to the base. The picture he had on the console was of a little girl. At the base he meets up with his SO and the girl in the base. Sulu and his SO had their arms around each other as they walked away. SO was also at the birthday party. It was tastefully done IMO. Would have been really easy to get ham fisted and make it a thing.

Wow. I didn't even notice that.
I noticed the picture of the girl and immediately thought of Kirk meeting Sulu's daughter in Generations. So I liked that nod. |

I think I'm the only human on the planet who really liked Star Trek I. Whatevs, though.
There are a few "non-boring" Trek movies that are true Trek. IV and VI. V, Generations, and Insurrection are also "true Trek" movies, but they're just really really freakin terrible |

The first Star Trek was good, I guess for its day, but it was just so slooooowww.
V was a catastrophe. Generations was an abomination. I actually didn't mind Insurrection (that one really did feel like a Star Trek episode). *someone make a note in the logs - SNR didn't like a movie that had Deanna Troi mental rape in it. Something feels off. |
