Big improvement does happen.

Trent Williams was really bad his rookie year. Now is one of best tackles.

Anthony Davis was really bad for 2 years. Was one of the youngest guys drafted so it makes sense. Then he became one of the best tackles.

His feet are fine. Some technique issues but he has fast feet. His problem is because of his shoulder, he is cheating in by leaning into the guy he's blocking. as he trusts his shoulder you should see a lot less of that.

No, I know what my eyes have been seeing and its not just his shoulder.

He's being beaten around the edge consistently and even if leaning in a bit keeps him from maintaining the form needed to kick outside fast enough, its not the entire story... his feet look slow, period.

Yeah, I'm not attempting to put it all on his shoulder. But in the gifs posted, he appears to be favoring/afraid to use his left arm.

I don't even know if his left shoulder was the injured one, which is what I was trying to determine with my first post.

Yeah, it is. Same shoulder that was being tapped by the trainer in that one gif.

Right, for some reason I took your post as insinuating that his shoulder doesnt explain all of his troubles, which mirrors my thoughts.

It is his left arm IIRC, which makes me wonder why he isnt kicking out fast enough on these ends so he can get his body in front of them and not have to rely so much on that outside arm to slow them up.

It's because of his left arm. He wanted rushers to go to his outside because if he kicked out right away, they would almost always counter and attack his inside shoulder, which he couldn't use very well. The majority of times when he got beat bad, Fisher got beat to the inside. That's where his "slow feet" comes from.

I hear what you're saying, if he overcompensates to the outside it makes it easier to go in.

But I'm not real sure if the being beaten inside more often part is true, the times I've really noticed him getting hosed in when someone swoops around the edge without him barely laying a hand on them.

Quick feet are great but eventually you need to plant them and block.

Imagine trying to slow or stop a rush on the balls of your feet. You can't.

Once you slide out to a spot to set the edge you need to hunker down.
From then on it is a reaction game of don't commit to move to the outside or inside until you are pretty sure the rusher is going that way. Maybe pick up 1 foot and be ready to move but keep the other in the turf.
If he comes right at you with a bull rush a big help is to use your arms to keep him from putting his hands on on your chest while extended and driving you into the pocket.

His balance and technique is way off and when that sucks it doesn't much matter how big and strong you are.

I agree with Viper. He should watch tapes of Willie Roaf till his eyes bleed, whih given his injury history should be about 8 minutes in.

I usually notice him when he gives up pressure on his inside shoulder. At least, those are the ones that stood out the most to me last season.

When a Tackle gives up pressure on the arc, the QB at least has some chance of stepping up and extending the play. However, if the OT allows pressure on his inside shoulder and the defender has a direct line to the QB instead of having a run an arc, that's a much bigger no-no.

He looked bad his first year and had been an elite tackle ever since.

Rock solid basic technique and guys who have been around for 10 years can still provide good protection. Them being slower and less powerful isn't what stops them from being a good starter. What grinds down over years on a 300+lb body is the training camps and practices in addition to games. It's how Walter Jones could skip all the stuff and show up and be good to go week 1.

It's how lots of quality starter NFL lineup are found late in the draft. Mediocre measurables but great skill and savvy at the details makes up for it.
