Cutting him next season saves you about $1.5 million on that cap. Now if I do the same 'accelerate vs. add' analysis with Berry that I did with Houston, I guess I have to add another $8 million back in there as we'll almost certainly be eating $8 million in 2020 either way. So I guess at that point, once you get past the stick shock of eating $15 million in dead money and realize you were eating at least $8 million either way, it's more defensible.

Christ that contract is bad. Just an absolute disaster all around. We got PR'd into offering him free money there. And when you look at how the safety market has absolutely eaten shit...ugh; that deal just sucks.
Especially when he isn't playing a ****ing down of football.

That bitch Hootie was carping and wailing about how the Chiefs were doing him dirty by not just paying him what he wanted and being done with it.

The dude spent the first 5 years of his career as the highest paid safety in football due to coming in under the old, awful rookie scale. Then he played on the tag for a year and I believe had the highest cash earnings that season, then he got that absolutely awful extension.

Berry will have made over $100 million to play football for this team; probably near $110 million. To this point he's 87 games. And I get it - cancer sucks and injuries aren't his fault, but good Christ - the Chiefs have not done Eric Berry dirty.

He's a great leader and a credit to the organization off the field but it's hard to say that he's put forward much of an ROI at this point.

Cutting EB will result in more dead money than some teams pay their entire defensive backfield. (Guessing a little, there. You know ... for rhetorical purposes of establishing hyperbole.)

It would generate more dead money than setting off a dirty nuke in a bank vault.

It would generate more dead money than you'd find in Howard Hughes' will.

It would generate more dead money ... well ... you get the idea.

We're basically going to waste the cap advantage we would have had with Mahomes on a rookie contract because of God awful contracts for Houston and Berry.

This is all a bit dramatic isn't it, one game in? What if Berry and Houston have all pro seasons from here? And there's still $50m in cap space for 2019 as it stands right now with both contracts on the books, and before any annual increase in the cap.

On the Dee Ford point, I almost hope he doesn't have a stellar season because I don't want the Chiefs to consider bringing him back, and I want the young guys to get some playing time.

It was probably Ford's best game as a pro. He's had more sacks but yesterday was a complete game. If he would stop taking such a wide angle around the edge he'd have gotten 3 sacks as well.

He performed about as I expected yesterday, which is to say... better than what we're used to seeing

We all know what contract years can do to players

I hope it continues, looking for 10-12 sacks and a handful of other assorted big plays... then we ship him off for a nice draft pick

That isn't happening unless we tag and trade him. If they're going to do anything tag wise...I'd slap him with the transition tag. Let him explore the market and if the contract is around what you want to pay him....then match it. If not....then let him walk and take the comp pick.

Houston is probably in "just had family day in River Falls" shape compared to Marty teams.

He'll probably start surging around week 3 or 4.

Houston isn't a trash player...he just isn't a 100 million dollar player, if you could get him for like half of what he makes then he's fine, he just is no longer a dominant force he's a complimentary guy that plays the run well and gets some sacks.

He's just way overpaid.
