MELLINGER: Should The Chiefs Move On From Smith?

Yep, another Alex Smith thread - but a solid and fair read from Sam Mellinger.

Quote:
The only way forward is through brutal honesty and realistic self-evaluation. No sport moves as quickly, or with such little empathy, as the NFL.

Only fools assume what happened in the past will continue to happen in the future, unless that assumption is “the Patriots will win every year from now until armageddon because Bill Belichick is an alien.”

And so it is that this particular group of Chiefs players and executives attempt to solve a puzzle that no group of Chiefs players and executives has solved since 1970, which is so long ago CBS erased the tape to save money:

Get to the Super Bowl.

And it’s hard to believe that will happen without addressing the quarterback situation.

This is not a call for the Chiefs to walk away from Alex Smith, even though this is the first offseason since his arrival in which they could do it without a fatal salary cap hit. This is a call for them to look, to try, to make sure they don’t have access to a better option — whether that’s Tony Romo in a trade, Deshaun Watson in the draft (which would almost certainly require a trade up), or anything else.

Why yes, yes I do.

In typical Chiefs fashion, they half-assed THAT too.

Can not work past first read.

Has entered Cassel Stare-Down Zone, and is working toward perfection of said technique.

Multiple open targets and 1st downs/touchdowns left on the field.

Facts, not fiction.

I'm just going to slowly accept that they will probably bring Alex back for another season, because that's just the likely outcome.

How do you win a SB with Alex? Well, their only hope is to get great improvement out of the run game and the run defense. The run defense fixes could already be on our injured reserve. Then for the run game, maybe they go get a Dalvin Cook... I just don't know.

Do we have the OL to improve the run game? Also do not trust Andy to call enough and timely running plays.

Andy Reid has his flaws but I can't believe that he can stick with Alex after watching the game tapes of him missing wide open receivers and just outright refusing to release the ball. If Andy accepts this behavior then it's time to look for another head coach as well as another quarterback. Dorsey has to apply pressure to Andy to face reality. No quarterback hits every open receiver but when you become gunshy then it's time to be replaced. The team deserves a better chance to show their abilities.

Or because Maclin was only targeted 80 times; good for 83rd in the league. I'm not blaming Smith though, it's a long way to throw from the middle of the field clear over to the sidelines.

I don't think you can unless you have the 2015 Denver defense. Here's the thing besides the playoff game against Houston our Dline has gotten it's ass kicked. Missing Bailey and Howard didn't help but it still makes you wonder.

The gifs in this thread are plain old sad. What a terrible player Alex is. How can Andy and Dorsey look at film and say to themselves he should come back for another year. If they don't move on from him right now then they are failures. There is no reason not to roll with Foles next season. None! He's an Andy draft pick and can give us a year for a young draft choice to get the play book down.

there is some irony in a 49ers fan donating x amount of dollars to a Chiefs forum to be mod protected.

Another line of punditry that's getting tiresome is this one that the rest of the team has to be epic all-world to overcome our singularly unskilled QB.

Teams seeking a championship can be like the three bears. Baby bear, Momma Bear and Papa bear.

Those who hate Alex fall into Momma and Papa bear camps simultaneously

Momma bear too cold. We need superstars up and down the roster to make up for lack of QB production.

Papa bear too hot. We need 'another' Brady/Rapist/Rodgers from somewhere, anywhere, so no team can play shitty enough they the QB can't bail them out.

Chiefs are baby bear, or as I outlined earlier, assembled like a watch with every component fulfilling a critical function.

Every time we lose, it's a multi-form failure. Last weekend was perhaps the most broad failure we've had, and even then it was a close game.

It was close because; 1) the secondary was a rare bright spot, outside an occasional DE in man coverage, 2) because Rapist was even more dogshit than Alex, and 3) because even though the Steelers run game was raping faces between the 20s, Tomlin/Haley called on Rapist to be dogshit in the red zone resulting in FGs when many many TDs were there for the taking.

We don't need 'all world' 85 Bears, Greatest Show on Turf, 2015 Broncos, weapons on O and D. We need to assembled team to play to their abilities on the day that counts.

Now I don't know if this playoff shrinking violet thing is an anomaly or a concrete and enduring character flaw. But it wasn't a simple one man, one problem fix, and it doesn't need something superhuman to overcome it.

If anything, the trainers and coaches have to put the parts of the 'watch' in position to take advantage of our assets, more than breaking everything up and building a new watch.
