Those things don't seem necessary in the context of those stories, though.

This must be absolutely necessary. It's part of the explanation for where Luke is. Since finding him is integral to the film, that's a huge plot point.

It was important. Integral to the plot? No. The movie wasn't about the Clone Wars or the Jedi or even the Force (which was shown plenty anyway). Mostly it was about blowing up the Death Star.

This movie is literally about the search for Luke Skywalker. They need to explain his disappearance.

Dane, get off it, dude. Some great -- GREAT -- movies employ flashback. Citizen Kane is essentially a story told entirely in flashback. It's a Wonderful Life employs them masterfully. Memento was chronological flashback. Kill Bill 1 and 2 use them effectively.

In the hands of a hack, flashbacks are hokey and cliche. In the hands of talented artists, they're effective storytelling tools. Stop acting like they all suck.

You've listed outliers.

For the most part, flashback scenes constitute bad story telling and narratives.

But it's okay. We'll all agree to disagree, as Clay suggested earlier and hope the film is good, despite a flashback.

On second thought, if this movie even approaches that of an Orson Wells, Billy Wilder, Chris Nolan or Quentin Tarantino film, I'll eat every word I've posted about this subject.
