Bills about to sign Kolb

Adam Schefter ‏@AdamSchefter 57s
Bills and former Cardinals QB Kevin Kolb finalizing a deal tonight that will give Buffalo one more starting-caliber QB.

Another top 10 team signing a veteran QB. Wonder what that could mean?

Yea I have been consistent. I havnt contradicted myself. I truly believe we are gonna draft Geno. Some will agree with me while most of you wont. But I trust Dorsey to do the right thing and go Rodgers 2.0 here.

I'm not sure you can call it Rodgers 2.0. In this case, the Chiefs paid a high price and traded for a QB that is getting paid starter money. Then the signed another QB that is getting paid backup money ($3.8 million this year) and then drafting another QB with the first pick in the draft. I think that is unprecedented. That's not anything 2.0.

The way contracts are set up, decisions have to be made by the end of year 3, and a #1 pick would mean that Smith would end up getting a salary that was the average of the top 10 QBs in the league in year 5. Having only a year or less to evaluate him actually playing is not something most people are going to think is a good idea.
I think a coach and GM could make a pretty accurate evaluation of the situation with a season on the bench and a season on the field.

I have said this before, and have been consistent on this point.

If you see a QB in the draft that you believe has the tools to be a franchise level QB but also belive him to be a guy that needs some seasoning on the bench, then you draft him high.

I don't care if it's 1 year or 2.

Teams that are afraid of risk are teams that watch SBs.

If there's any silver lining, it's that the Chiefs could have traded for either Flynn (Dorsey's boy) or gotten Kolb (Reid's boy). Even if I hate that they went with Alex Smith, it shows that they made a pick based on who they thought was the best fit, not based on loyalty like in the Pioli years.

I really hope that means they're open-minded about QBs, especially going into the draft.

I don't get how Flynn and Kolb are Dorsey and Reid's "boys." Their teams drafted them and then got rid of them.

Kinda different than the Pioli Cassel situation.

Cassel left New England because he was way too expensive to keep as a backup. Same with Green Bay and Flynn. The Eagles got rid of Kolb because he was expensive and even though he was a good sport about being a backup, it was always going to be a distraction for Vick.

Dorsey obviously thought enough of Flynn to keep him around for 4 years. Reid liked Kolb enough to make him a starter and pretty reluctantly took him out of that role. I'm sure the Chiefs could have gotten Foles, incidentally, for a similar asking price as they got for Smith.

The difference is the Eagles and Packers flipped Flynn and Kolb for more than they paid.

The Patriots flipped Cassel to Pioli after they let Pioli go.

I don't get how you can say there was any feelings toward Flynn or Kolb. I don't recall any links to those players except for media speculation.

I think you don't want to pay top money for a Derek Anderson situation, so you want to see at least 2 years of your QB before paying him top 10 money.

Jake Locker does agree, however and Blaine Gabbert should agree.

What is important however is not that the league has changed it's if Andy Reid has changed along with the league, because we KNOW what his previous philosophy was.

Reid decided Kolb was his QBOTF. He got a big $12M contract from Philly and was named the starter. The Eagles brought Vick in as an experiment. Kolb got injured, Vick started to roll, and Reid was pressured to make Vick the full-time starter.

Matt Flynn was kept around for 4 years. You don't re-sign a backup QB with no playing experience for 4 years if you don't see anything in him. Green Bay wasn't going to pay him $20M to be a backup.

Both Flynn and Kolb left because their teams knew they couldn't possibly re-sign them in free agency. Same with Cassel. It just so happens that all 3 teams were able to trade these guys away and get something in return before free agency hit. There is nothing that indicates that these guys left because Reid or Dorsey didn't like them. They left largely because they weren't going to re-sign.

In years past, you were stuck with paying huge contracts to high draft picks that busted for 3 years or longer.

Taking a shot today and paying one year big money is far less of a financial risk than it ever was before.

That is just excuse making for fear of risk.

Don't you think that if Reid or Dorsey gave a shit about Flynn or Kolb that there would have been whispers of the Chiefs talking to Arizona or Seattle seeing as both of the QBs are CLEARLY available?

When names like kolb and flynn are being thrown around in the league, it says a lot about what teams truly think of this QB class.
