I'm not sure you can call it Rodgers 2.0. In this case, the Chiefs paid a high price and traded for a QB that is getting paid starter money. Then the signed another QB that is getting paid backup money ($3.8 million this year) and then drafting another QB with the first pick in the draft. I think that is unprecedented. That's not anything 2.0.

I have said this before, and have been consistent on this point.
If you see a QB in the draft that you believe has the tools to be a franchise level QB but also belive him to be a guy that needs some seasoning on the bench, then you draft him high. I don't care if it's 1 year or 2. Teams that are afraid of risk are teams that watch SBs.

If there's any silver lining, it's that the Chiefs could have traded for either Flynn (Dorsey's boy) or gotten Kolb (Reid's boy). Even if I hate that they went with Alex Smith, it shows that they made a pick based on who they thought was the best fit, not based on loyalty like in the Pioli years.
I really hope that means they're open-minded about QBs, especially going into the draft. |

Dorsey obviously thought enough of Flynn to keep him around for 4 years. Reid liked Kolb enough to make him a starter and pretty reluctantly took him out of that role. I'm sure the Chiefs could have gotten Foles, incidentally, for a similar asking price as they got for Smith. |

The difference is the Eagles and Packers flipped Flynn and Kolb for more than they paid.
The Patriots flipped Cassel to Pioli after they let Pioli go. I don't get how you can say there was any feelings toward Flynn or Kolb. I don't recall any links to those players except for media speculation. |

I think you don't want to pay top money for a Derek Anderson situation, so you want to see at least 2 years of your QB before paying him top 10 money.

What is important however is not that the league has changed it's if Andy Reid has changed along with the league, because we KNOW what his previous philosophy was. Last edited by BigCatDaddy; 03-31-2013 at 09:13 AM.. |

Matt Flynn was kept around for 4 years. You don't re-sign a backup QB with no playing experience for 4 years if you don't see anything in him. Green Bay wasn't going to pay him $20M to be a backup. Both Flynn and Kolb left because their teams knew they couldn't possibly re-sign them in free agency. Same with Cassel. It just so happens that all 3 teams were able to trade these guys away and get something in return before free agency hit. There is nothing that indicates that these guys left because Reid or Dorsey didn't like them. They left largely because they weren't going to re-sign. |

Taking a shot today and paying one year big money is far less of a financial risk than it ever was before. That is just excuse making for fear of risk.

When names like kolb and flynn are being thrown around in the league, it says a lot about what teams truly think of this QB class.
