Not a ton to say about last night. That was brutal to watch in person, but that's what happens when:

1) your SP shits the bed
2) Their SP pitches a gem
3) You don't take advantage of early opportunities to get to their guy

If the Royals scratch those two runs across in the third, it's a completely different game.

I get that they were trying to be aggressive early against a tough pitcher who pounds the strike zone, but the at-bats from Escobar and Aoki were just not good enough. (I haven't watched the replay - couldn't tell live if Aoki actually went around or not).

Bumgarner holding the Royals scoreless there, combined with tacking on two extra runs in the top of the 4th, effectively ended that game.

Duffy, to me, looks like he might have "dead arm" or something. He was pretty clearly/visibly gassed after about 50 pitches, and his velocity wasn't there. The control was pretty good, at least, and he was effective. But I don't think you can count on him for more than 2-3 inning bursts at this point.

Escobar and Aoki were clearly anxious, as well as Hosmer. Cain, as usual, was the best player on the team, last night.

Yeah, it was a brief at-bat, but it looked like Hosmer was trying to give the Royals the lead there rather than just putting the ball in play.

I usually trust Escobar to hit with two strikes (and wasn't worried when that count got to 0-2), but he didn't execute there.

Aoki obviously didn't, either.

Oh, well. Turn it around in Game 2 tonight. The Giants really couldn't win the series if they lost Game 1 with Bumgarner throwing. It was a must-have for the Giants, and they got it.

Could also be his oblique (hopefully it's one of the first two, because those are much more treatable).

Not much you can do with a strained oblque other than rest it.

I think he's got some "dead arm" going on. Make sense considering his workload and what last year was like for him.
