It’s official.

Rookie first-rounder Patrick Mahomes will start for the Chiefs against the Broncos this Sunday in Denver. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid announced the move during his usual Wednesday press conference.

“Every snap that he gets is a valuable snap for him whenever he has that chance of getting in there,” Reid said. “It’s invaluable and fortunately, we’re in a situation we can do that.”

The Chiefs are locked into the No. 4 seed on the AFC side of the postseason regardless of Sunday’s game outcome.

Reid added that Alex Smith will take the scout team reps this week.

“Fortunately we have a quarterback that understands it,” Reid said. “[Smith] is having a phenomenal year. It’s an MVP-caliber year, so he understands the situation and this won’t detour off of anything he’s doing the remainder of the season.”

Though Mahomes has yet to play, Reid said the season has given him an opportunity to get to know him, and Reid confirmed Wednesday all the scouting reports checked out.

“You hear what he’s all about but until the player is there, you really don’t know, I’m saying as a person,” he said. “He’s everything everybody said he was, a great person—works hard, loves playing—all those things, we’ve seen. Obviously, he hasn’t played in the game other than the preseason, but he’s done a great job of the other stuff.”

That changes Sunday.

I want an above average quarterback, not some guy who builds up stats by being mediocre for a long time.

Marino? Heck, yeah.

Favre? Certainly.

The clock is ticking and he's been in this show for a good while now. It is entirely possible that he could become damaged goods if those supporting cast issues aren't resolved. And besides, the Colts are not about to become a well-oiled, smooth running uber-franchise anytime in the foreseeable future.

I get your point and a good one BUT what everyone is waiting for is if he will be completely healed with no residual effect to his throwing. And if he totally recovers there are 25 plus other teams that would take him in a heartbeat. Luck is that good that I don't think time will hurt him like it would your average run of the mill NFL QB. Most FOs around the league "know" how Indy's FO got Luck injured by not giving him a good enough o-line.

Mahomes, chosen 10th overall in the 2017 draft out of Texas Tech, spent all season watching and waiting while Alex Smith led the league with a 104.7 passer rating and topped 4,000 yards passing for the first time in his 13th NFL season — and likely his last in Kansas City.

Having clinched the middling AFC West again, the Chiefs (9-6) have the luxury of sneaking a peek at their future quarterback while resting other starters before the playoffs begin next week.

“We’re in a position where we can do that,” coach Andy Reid said. “It gives the kid some experience, that’s the reason. Listen, the Broncos are a good football team, real good defense. It’ll be a great experience to play against that crew.”
Denver’s defense is ranked second, behind only Minnesota’s.

“There is nothing else better than getting to go against the best,” Mahomes said as he prepared for his first NFL start.
“I’m not eager to play the second guy,” said Broncos star linebacker Von Miller. “He is the guy of the future, though. So, it’s good to go and play against him for the future. But you just would like the circumstances to be totally different.

“You would like this game to mean more than what it means, and you would like for all of the starters to play. I would like a lot of different stuff to happen in 2017, and it didn’t happen.”

Oh, I don't know about Marcus Nash being the most disappointing thing to happen to Donk drafts. There are so many good choices.

Sylvester Williams, Tim Tebow, Knowshon Moreno (AND Robert Ayers from the same draft), Jarvis Moss, George Foster, Ashley Lelie, Willie Middlebrooks, and Deltha O'Neal all deserve more consideration as bigger Donk 1st round busts over Marcus Nash

Everyone who is anyone is excited to FINALLY see Mahomes.

Just imagine the hype, favorable calls, media attention etc if we could of started him in November when we desperately needed him!

Not to mention coaching. It's amazing Pagano lasted as long as he has. But his his arm may be toast. If he gets another shot he may look more like end of career Peyton manning, not the early version.
