SI : Chiefs have a problem and his name is Dwayne Bowe

His performance so far this season has been underwhelming. He is in a position to clock in his worst performance in the NFL so far and is projecting to have 54 receptions for 586 yards w/6TD.

Is his problem that defenses are keying in on him... or is it that, as suggested by Greg Bedard, that Bowe has lost a step and is no longer a top tier WR?

6. The Chiefs will win a lot of games with their current formula: good defense that takes the ball away (15 times so far) and an offense that doesn’t turn it over (just five) for an NFL-leading plus-10 in giveaways/takeaways. But to beat the good teams, they’re going to have to start stretching the field. Defenses know QB Alex Smith is overly conservative, so they’re dropping a safety down and playing a lot of man. The Chiefs have a big problem with receiver Dwayne Bowe. Not sure what has happened to him, but he lacks explosion and can’t beat man coverage anymore. Defenses don’t fear him at all.

Umm..... Trent Dilfer? Shaun King? I guess?
Steve Young.

Winning 2 SBs is no small accomplishment, and I don't think many QBs could have done it even with that team. I give Eli a halo because regardless of how he plays in the regular season, there are few QBs better than Eli I'd rather have once I get in the playoffs.
Because I don't believe Super Bowl wins are the end all be all of qb play. It's a part of it, yes.

But it's used so much to justify bad qb play IMO.

Gotcha.
Eli and Big Ben have won a Super Bowl where their running games were so-so, and their defenses weren't elite. Eli in particular... that's not ideal for him. You're forcing him to play outside his strengths, which would be no different from if Green Bay told Aaron Rodgers they were going to start running R2P2.

And I never said Smith was a schmuck. I'm not a Smith fan, but I've been one of the most complimentary of his play so far so you need to lay off that shit. I just hate when people say Smith is magically turning around a 2-14 team. He is doing a good job managing a team that was far better than their record. And the idea that Eli and Big Ben couldn't have big success here, given how much better our supporting casts are... that makes you sound like an enormous homer. There's no doubt Eli and Big Ben are in a class way above Alex Smith... so far. That doesn't mean Smith is doing a bad job.

This isn't the Chicago Bears or Bucs who got to the Super Bowl in spite of their QB. In the 2 Super Bowl runs, Eli was elitely efficient. In the 2011 Super Bowl, he was playing at an elite level (apart from the SF game... he was pretty so-so). So that's where I disagree with you. He's not even close to Trent Dilfer.

Again, I'm not arguing necessarily differently.

Just that because he won 2 SBs, it seems people can't evaluate that outside of those two elite runs, he's been a scattershot down field passer.

Arguably, the Steelers' defense the past 5 years has been a rapidly declining defense that does statistically well, but had a lot of cracks in the armor. In the last 2 runs to the Super Bowl, the playoff defense gave up 23 points or more in 4 of the 6 games. Those runs were mostly Big Ben.

Because the Giants are stupid. Eli isn't built this way, yet they've decided to completely ignore the RB position. Eli should be managing games. And in managing games, you'll get a frustratingly inconsistent regular season QB who is one of the last QBs you want to face in the playoffs.

And unlike many people, the idea that he has to have a RB control the tempo doesn't make him a bad QB. Again, it takes an elite skill set to manage games the way he can. But he has to have something to work with.

No, you're strawmanning this. I never said, "It's not important if QBs throw INTs. Throw all the picks you want! I don't care! They don't matter!"

The issue was, "INTs aren't everything." I argued that not throwing INTs is not hte QB's #1 priority, within reason.

This all got started because we were talking about a hypothetical Alex Smith that didn't have a great RB like Jamaal Charles and a great defense, which is the very position Eli Manning finds himself in. If you take those things away, it destroys Alex's rhythm completely, and all he has left is not throwing picks.

Steve Young never would have turned into that version of Alex Smith in the same position. That's why Young has a Super Bowl and is in the HOF. Not because he didn't throw INTs.

Personally, who gives a rat's ass about who is getting the ball. The game isn't about Dwayne Bowe's fantasy numbers, it's about getting enough wins to get to the playoffs which gives you the possibility, a chance at hoisting the Lombardi at the very end.
Didn't need to read any further. THIS. Just glad that Bowe got paid already... so he should have nothing to bitch about. Just smile, draw coverage, win games, and cash your checks. Would be nice if he can up his effort level to say.. 85%.. but even at his current 75%, he's still a threat, so...
