Alex Smith Traded to Chiefs

Well, it looks like the deal is done.

Jay Glazer @JayGlazer
49ers have completed a trade with the Chiefs for Alex Smith, tho can't be official til March 12. Chiefs really made a commitment to Smith

Jay Glazer @JayGlazer
Deal has been agreed upon between Chiefs and 49ers. Compensation unclear but I'm told again Chiefs have made a clear commitment to Smith.

but if you go and look at the 1st 10 picks of the 2nd round...the # of hits really isn't anything to write home about. The entire 2nd round, really.

ChiefsPlanet always overestimates the value of draft picks. It is just what this board does. The top 15 picks are ALWAYS littered with all-pros. Each and every year (other than 2009 lololol)...

after that...the draft really becomes a crapshoot.
The thing that gets me about the negotiation is the Chiefs didn't think about the depth of this draft all and play it to their strengths when they made this trade. The #34 overall pick is probably more valuable this year than it's been in a long long time.

If they were adamant about acquiring Alex Smith and not drafting Geno or Barkley, they should have figured out a way to make the deal so they wouldn't get hamstrung with that #1 overall pick like they did in 2009. That's the whole problem. The 2nd rounder is gone, so now they HAVE to trade down if they want to get the right personnel. Otherwise it's looking like the Albert walks/Joeckel gets drafted strategy is going to take effect.

Basically, our first draft pick happens with the first pick of the 3rd round. Great job, Chiefs.

They gave up a 2nd round pick for him, so it looks like at this point, they're not planning on drafting a legit rookie who could take over in one or two seasons. For that matter, it's pretty likely they don't do it next year either. Again, no 2nd round pick.

They're essentially paying a ton for "better than Cassel." Not even that. They're paying a ton for "probably better than Cassel, but don't be surprised if he's not."

I mean, what the **** do they see from Alex Smith's pro career that leads them to believe he's better than that?

And if this guy shocks the world and goes Drew Brees on the NFL, it was all according to plan? No. That's LUCK. Blind, stupid luck.

I'll be delighted if it is blind stupid luck, but that doesn't mean they made a smart business decision.
Why didn't they make a smart business decision? The stadium will be full again come September. They will promote the hell out of Alex Smith and what he did the last 2 years.

Outside this message board, fans are far more excited about this move than drafting Geno Smith #1.

While I don't agree with the trade, I don't want to kill myself over it either.

If Andy Reid loves Alex Smith, and believes in him, how is that considered blind stupid luck if he does well? They are paying this premium because they believe he's the best option.

So I don't really get that line of thinking. It's not like some mail order bride operation here. They've studied him and apparently seen things they like a lot more than the tapes of Geno Smith and every other prospect in this draft.

As long as the Chiefs don't extend Alex Smith until he does something, I'll be non-suicidal about this.

You're right. Dorsey and Reid didn't consider the depth factor of this draft when making this trade. ****ing please. Reid has been playing people for draft picks for years but you think he didn't consider options at 34 and weigh them? Do you think these trades just happen like fantasy football deals?

I wasn't happy about that fact, either.

I see no reason why they wouldn't have taken our 4th this year and a conditional 3rd next year that could go all the way up to a 1st if Alex hit certain marks...

someone would have really outbid that?

I'm almost certain there will be picks coming back from the 49ers.

I have my doubts but I guess we'll have to wait and see.

I wasnt happy with what was given. But Cassel and Kolb both fetched 2nds. So its ok now. Hopefully the guy does well and Ill keep my faith in Reid and Dorsey. Thats why we hired them. Let them have a season before judging

That's what has to take place. If Reid and Dorsey are that damn confident that's who Alex Smith really is and he pulls it off, I'll give them credit.

Right now I've got those odds at somewhere between my dog spontaneously combusting tomorrow afternoon and me winning the lottery.
I guess it depends on where you look but to a whole lot of people drafting Geno Smith with the #1 and then winning a SB would be the same kind of luck. I'm all for Geno Smith but he's no sure thing to even be a competent starter in the NFL at this point. You went all in and it's a big loss for you. I'm sorry man but it is waht it is.

If the Rams win a Super Bowl with Sam Bradford, are they just lucky too?

I get everybody wants to be the objective guy when it comes to Geno Smith, but too often that objectivity and skepticism turns into dumbassery.

Your post I quoted was one such example.

That should be able to get done simply by upping his attempts.
His highest attempt total of a year was 445.

Between Vick and Foles last year, they had 616 attempts.

If Reid can get Alex to maintain his 8ypa while upping his attempts, he will put up massive numbers and if he can do so while protecting the football, the Chiefs will win a lot of football games.

616
X 8
-------
4928

I bet that's what Reid sees in this trade...
