I'm almost to the point where I don't want to know much more.
The Entertainment Weekly interviews have given me just enough background to where I won't be lost watching the film for the first time, so at this point, more interviews and TV Spots will likely be too much info. |

This is how I suspected they'd deal with Luke. I wonder if his reveal will be met with at the end of the film?
------------------ Continuing their "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" in-depth stories this week, EW's next feature article talks with filmmaker J.J. Abrams about Luke Skywalker's involvement in the story. Mark Hamill's iconic character has remained under wraps so far, his face not appearing in any of the promotional material released. Abrams says how other characters perceive Luke in the narrative was one of the biggest draws for him to direct: "It was the thing that struck me the hardest, which was the idea that doing a story that took place nearly forty years after Jedi meant that there would be a generation for whom Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Leia would be as good as myth. They'd be as old and as mythic as the tale of King Arthur. They would be characters who they may have heard of, but maybe not. They'd be characters who they might believe existed, or just sounded like a fairy tale." Abrams goes on to specifically cite Daisy Ridley's Rey, a young scavenger on a remote and desolate planet, who would probably be only barely aware of the man who helped shatter the Empire a lifetime ago: "To someone who is living alone and struggling without a formal education or support system, who knows what that person in the literal middle of nowhere would have ever heard about any of these things, or would ever know, and how much that person would have to infer and piece together on their own. So the idea that someone like that would begin to learn that the Jedi were real, and that the Force exists, and that there's a power in the universe that sounds fanciful but is actually possible, was an incredibly intriguing notion." John Boyega's Finn on the other hand certainly knows who Luke Skywalker is thanks to his Stormtrooper training, but his journey is more about a changing of perceptions rather than discovering one: "For Finn, he's been raised from the ashes of the Empire. He's been taught about Luke Skywalker, he knows about his history. For him it's like joining the army and then learning about one of the great enemies of your country. It has that effect on him. But in terms of the Force, and the magical stuff that happens, that is the point where Finn kind of questions what is what. What is the Force, what part does Luke Skywalker play in all of this?" |

I guess that answers the question about stormtroopers trained to fight jedi (the trailer I mean, the shot with the trooper fighting Finn).

Speaking about the Starkiller Base, an ice planet capable of destroying solar systems, director J.J. Abrams' says:
"It is very much - and it's acknowledged as such in the movie - apparently another Death Star. But what it's capable of, how it works, and what the threat is, is far greater than what the Death Star could have done. Starkiller Base is another step forward, technologically speaking, in terms of power." Gleeson says his nefarious character isn't so much a fighter as a ruthless autocrat: "There's an air of superiority, and being better than those people around you. He's pretty ruthless. A strong disciplinarian would be a mild way of putting it. You don't get that high up in your life that quickly unless you're pretty ruthless. You have to put a few people down on the way to get there." Asked why the 'First Order', the rebuilt version of the Empire, appeals to Hux, Gleeson says: "It's in the title: order. It's a desire to lump everything in its place and just have power. The desire for power is hugely motivating for a lot of people and normally the people who want all the power are not the ones who should have it. People who are messed up themselves often want to squash the individuality out of other people because they're afraid of what it means. He's kind of opposite Kylo Ren. They have their own relationship, which is individual and unusual. One of them is strong in different ways than the other. They're both vying for power." |

The long lost child story line has been used already. I just don't see them going back to that well again. Plus, why would Han and Leia give up a child? And if they did not give up a child willingly, then there will have to be a whole separate story line on how the child was taken, etc.
Having one of the new characters be a Skywalker is an easy red herring for Abrams.

but the original story is the skywalkers are to bring balance to the force.. Anakin to be the sith to widdle down the jedi to just a few. Then luke to be the jedi. Now there is only luke as a jedi, no sith. Kylo is to bring balance back to the force. Just my theory, and who's to say he's han and leia's? Maybe luke's?
I know it's the story line thats been used but it IS star wars.. thats what made the OT so great. It all revolves around the skywalkers. the whole star wars story. |

And as far as going back to the well, they are already doing it with the death star. Really pretty disappointed in that.

Didn't J.J. say that the new super weapon is along the lines of the next development of the Death Star, as in an advanced concept? It would make some sense that the former Imperial Forces would continue to work on and develop what they view as their ultimate weapon. The trailers have me excited, and I have avoided most spoilers, so my thinking may be way off base. I hope J.J. and Kasdan have come up with an original story that captures the spirit of the original trilogy while being original onto itself.
