Game of Thrones *Spoiler* Thread
There's been some recent confusion with the old spoiler thread, so I'm kicking off a new one for tonight's premiere. This is going to be the one for folks who've read all the books. So anything anybody might want to talk about is in bounds. Suffice to say, if you haven't read the books, you'll probably want to stay out of here until you do...
I'll bump the old spoiler-free thread shortly in case anybody's interested. For future reference the link to that one is here |

And he was about to let Tyrion be executed while knowing full well that he didn't do it.

Yeah, Tyrion's murdering Tywin is one of the most (if not the single most) justifiable killings in the entire series. For the characters involved and for the reader it's total justice and unbelievably cathartic.
That action balances out all the horrific, unjust, and heartbreaking events that precede it. |

And let's not forget Tyrion has been wasting his dad's money like candy as well as demeaning the Lannister name with his actions for years. He did kill his mother when he was born and Tywin understandably was angry but even afterwards with that knowledge, Tyrion decided to drag the Lannister name through the mud and spit on her memory. Tyrion isn't just Tywin's son, he is also Joanna's son and he doesn't give 2 flying farts about it. He is selfish and always has been. I have no sympathy for him. Joanna was also a Lannister fyi. |

Wait, are you the one who was arguing that Catelyn was more evil than Cersei?

I think Martin did a really nice job building some classical tragedy into the Tywin/Trion saga.
All Tywin wants is for his family to be secure and successful and powerful. For this to continue, he needs offspring as brilliant, ruthless and creative as he is. And he has one. In Tyrion, we see a Lannister perfectly capable of succeeding Tywin and making sure the Lannisters remain a strong house. One of Tywin's sisters makes this observation when speaking to Jaime in Feast (which is probably my favorite chapter in the entire book). Cersei is mentally unstable and has a delusional view of her abilities and place in the world (like most narcissists and sociopaths). Jaime is mentally disfigured by his relationship with Cersei (And let's be honest, I think we all can agree Cersei made the first move there) and physically disfigured by his father's men and politically disfigured by taking the White and killing the Mad King. But Tywin clings to those children, pinning all his hopes on them, and ignoring the truth about Tyrion. So, the end sum is that we end up with Jaime still in the Kingsguard, Cersei disgraced and removed as a power, Tywin and his brother Kevan are dead, Tyrion fled, Lancel Lannister has renounced name and title (in large part due to Cersei ruining him), and the only scions left to take up the Lannister name and lead it forward are Tywin's two underage nephews, Willem Lannister and Tyrek Lannister (second son of a second son and only son of a third son). So that one thing Tywin wanted? He pretty much destroyed it by not fully embracing Tyrion. Couldn't have happened to a nice son of a bitch.

He's the disappearing Lannister, isn't he? That slipped my mind when looking at the family tree.

He is. Tywin was very keen on finding him.
