Brandon McCarthy is actually a really good choice for a #3.
The rotation would be Ventura, Duffy, McCarthy, Vargas, Guthrie. That's a really solid pitching rotation |

I know I've been banging this drum forever, but I do think you leverage one of the big three to the Dodgers in a package with prospects for Pederson or Kemp (as long as LA would eat $$$, which they would.)
You can bring Hochevar back on a 1 year prove-it deal. And then you can pursue a SP via FA, either Santana or McCarthy. If you really want to get a great TV deal when it comes due, now's the time to go all-in on talent/winning. Then you bring a marketable product to a TV deal. This post-season run did not hurt at all. In that case, just say "eff it" and call Lester. |

I think we should hammer out an extension for Gordon as well as shore up our weaknesses and find a good replacement for Shields and I believe our 2015 payroll should be able to have a cap of $105-110M if NECESSARY.

Yes, definitely start negotiating with Gordon. I'd have a few conversations with Lorenzo Cain as well. That dude is the real freaking deal, man.
Every at bat in the post-season, he was dialed the heck in and putting wood on almost everything. |

I'm not sure they're willing to move Pederson, and I'm actually not sure how well he fits in to the Royals current window. If KC subtracts from one of its major strengths (bullpen), the player that is the centerpiece of the return MUST be able to help KC win from Day 1. Considering his strikeout issues, I'm not sold that's Pederson. Especially if you're sending Zimmer/Manaea/Mondesi/Binford + Almonte. to the Dodgers along with Holland or Davis, which is what I think it takes to make the deal.

Kemp would give us what would be missing going into 2015...RH Power.
His defense is good too, isn't it? A Gordon/Cain/Kemp OF works for me. |

He's slotted to make $12.5 million this year and next. If you talk to him about a 5 year deal that defers, say, $10-12 million between 15 and 16, but still ends up being something like 5 years, $60 million, that might help the Royals out tremendously. Even if he just defers a bit this year, say $6 million, that could be a really helpful factor (and is easy to spread out over 4 extra years).

His defense has not been great the past few years. He hasn't run the same way since the hamstring issues.

How about this lineup?
Escobar SS Hosmer 1B Cain CF Gordon LF Kemp RF Moose 3B Salvy C Infante 2B And then you still get to add a DH, either rotating out a positional player or bringing in a guy like Morse/Hunter/Kubel/ etc. |

Cain is under contract until 2018. He will be 32, my concern with him is how his body will hold up.

Also lets discuss the realities of the cable industry: It's built on per capita metrics, not ratings. Cable pushes a per-month surcharge onto all subscribers and cuts a check to content providers ie Royals. Whether people watch the Royals (lots) or the Rangers (not many) is irrelevant since the DFW market is 3x the size with 3x the subscribers to gouge each month. There's a reason StL and KC have shitty cable deals. If ratings mattered why wouldn't StL - who always kicks ass in that metric - have a bad deal too? |

I think it should also be pointed out that Hochevar is not a lock to be ready to pitch on Opening Day 2015. Due to the timing of his surgery, he might not be really ready to help until May or June.
That's a tough risk for a team like KC to take. This is similar to the Soria situation... if someone offers Hochevar a bigger/better deal and is willing to pay him $4-5 million over 2-3 years, it's unlikely KC can afford to match that.

How about a guy like Josh Johnson on a Wade Davis-like opportunity? He's got great stuff. Maybe you minimize his injury risk by going on a 1 year deal and putting him in the 'pen?
