Of course you can still draft a guy who is ranked as a first rounder but scouts poorly, but it's risky. You will probably get a guy with great physical tools and shit intangibles. You will eventually develop a feel for it where you don't have to waste scouting points after you scout the first trait. If a guy's first trait isn't at least a B- I usually don't spend any more points on him, regardless of where he's ranked. If the second trait isn't at least a C+ I stop there, because it usually means the third trait is shitty. I'll also only scout the first trait on skill position players, spend the rest of the points on other positions, and then go back to skill players after the combine info comes out. That way I'm not wasting points on a 4.7 WR. As for your GM/HC/Scouts, if you upgrade your coach you can get more scouting points to spend. Changing scouts will reduce the cost of scouting a certain position group. |

Seems like this year I'll get my ass handed to me if I get lazy about it. though, this year is the first year I'm playing on a higher difficulty; so I'm sure that has a lot to do with it. Adjustment period for me etc. I probably hollered out "Son of a bitch" about 20 times last night lol.

Pretty easy draft guide in the spoiler, just didn't want to post it in case anyone doesn't want to use a guide.

I used his guides in multiple M17 franchise leagues, very good stuff.

well dang...
now I'm half tempted to just start my franchise over and utilize that draft strategy. I"m only about 7 games in and haven't done any massive roster changes / trades etc. but, probably signed a guy or two that I probably didn't need to I suspect.

I restarted my franchise with the new roster. Although I picked up lots of players from free agency and traded them immediately for higher draft picks ( the corniest of Madden moves, I know), I kept the whole team intact.
I played on PRO with some custom sliders. I managed to beat New England on the first go, and despite some adversity. Houston was out half the game with a strain, Conley and Kelce were both lost for multiple games. Berry returned a pick-6 to keep me in the game though. And then, the unlikeliest of heroes... Mahomes was knocked out of the game in the 3rd quarter and Alex came in and immediately threw a TD strike to Escobar (not sure why Escobar was still on the squad though). Later in the fourth, he connected with Harris for a TD and won at the end of regulation. It really helps to build your own playbook I think. Mostly, my playbook is simpler with less sets within each formation and I only kept the plays I liked. I still have about 150 plays, but it is easier to navigate then the 450 otherwise with way too many sets/formations. I use a play-action heavy play book with lots of long and medium pass opportunities. Also, updating the audibles to have a mix of middle run, perimeter run, play action, and medium passes for each formation really helped. I found that running out of a single-back four WR set tends to stretch the defenses pretty thin, and with good audibles, you can switch out of it (or into the middle run) based on defenses.

getting sort of frustrated. I've been playing a franchise as a QB. To mix things up, once I selected to play as a QB, I randomly chose a team to play for. sure enough, I'm playing with the Browns lol.
but my frustration is, EVERY game comes down to like 3 points. that doesn't bother me all that much, but what does bother me is my defense is apparently #1 (mainly due to me chewing up clock on offense I suspect), but last season, the most the opposing offense punted in a single game was..............2 times. Virtually every game, the opposing teams punts once....if at all. so no matter how balanced I am, no matter how much time I chew up.......the game 90% of the time comes down to me needing to win it on the final drive. I'm not looking for blowouts by any means, and I try to sim as much as possible (trying to stay balanced between pass and run etc), playing smart (I only threw 6 INTs last season)...but man, it gets pretty old fast. how can I have a #1 defense, but never force the opponent to punt the ball? almost every game is 23-21; 24-20; 20-17. I can have 10 play drives that eat up 7 minutes of an 8 minute qtr, and I watch the sim as my defense is on the field, and it's bam bam bam, score. I'm consistently double TOP, and in some games I've been TRIPLE TOP. am I doing something wrong? If I'm double TOP with 0 turnovers in almost every game, I shouldn't be consistently down by 3 or 4 with 2 minutes to go, should I?

Changed up my play a bit after doing some reading, and have been getting a much better experience. I mainly play as a player in CFM (or whatever it's called), and I'm pretty much a sim-style player. I like to keep things realistic, and try to play the game as close to normal as possible with 12 minutes qtrs
After getting burned out with dumb shit in the game (the list is long), I decided to change up a bit. Started from scratch as a MLB, but basically built/chose my style of player for the kind of play I like to be/play as; then pick my team accordingly, instead of playing with the Chiefs everytime. Personally, I hate the 3-4 defense in real life (won't get into it here etc), and REALLY hate playing with it in Madden. For whatever reason, i've just never been successful with it. So I basically wanted to only play with a team that used a 4-3 as it's base. So that narrowed it down. And i wanted to have a decent offense to sim with. Narrowed down even further. Finally Chose. .. Detroit. Man, I've been having a ball playing games. I chose a Balanced 4-3 MLB as my player. I haven't made a ton of tweaks to sliders, and play on Pro (I'm not that great).. STill get frustrated at times that XP is basically all about tackles, and you don't get any sort of reward for "Doing Your Job" in the defense. I liked NBA 2Ks system of rewards if you were basically doing what the play called for. One game for shits and grins, I basically just freelanced ALL game; ended up with nearly double my normal tackling stats. But it wasn't as fun, because it was just too reeruned. I just wanted to see if I could totally ignore the defensive "play" and still be successful. I still don't like the training XP, where the scenarios are you have to make a stop as a Defense, the play never comes your way, so you have no way of contributing. I'll still do some individual tackling and running drills. but I skilp all the Zone Defense stuff. Still gotta tweak the sliders I think, because there have been quite a few games where it sems no matter what you do, you're wrong. Blitz, get burned. Hang back, QB will have 10+ seconds to pass since the DL get zero pressure. Nearly every game predictably comes down to the last 4 minutes of the game, and you as a defense have to make a stop to win the game. So, that's sort of lame/frustrating at times. there have been 3 games so far where my simulated offense got me less than 3 1st downs all game. Rant over. Re-ignited my interest once I changed up my team/position selection based on my play, instead of just playing with the Chiefs over and over again.

I finally decided to just play regular franchise, instead of just playing as a RB, or QB, or LB etc.
had one of the best / fun games in a LONG time. AFCG at Arrowhead, vs the Pats. Of course. Was up on the Pats 20-17 in the 4th. I had a long 4th qtr drive to go up 23-17. Pats get the ball back, I sim through their posession, and get the ball back with 32 seconds down by 1 of of course; 23-24 pats. On the 1st play of the drive around my own 35 yd line with a full stable of timeouts, I, called a crossing patterns at mid-field-ish. Hill was jammed up, along with the other WR. Figured Kelce would be open on the cross. I snap the ball, see the FS start barreling down to pickup I'm assuming Kelce. So quick decision time, and immediately I see Hill getting off the jam. Tapped his receiver button as he was even/ripping through right as I hitched from my last step, and tossed a GLORIOUS ass bomb which Hill hit absolutely perfectly in stride. had his man beat by probably 5 yards at the point of the catch. Given I was playing the Pats, I ran Hill around along the goal line as long as I could to eat up some time. TD KC Win 29-24, and go to the SB. went for a 2pt conversion, but didn't get it. I was so geeked up after that, I had to save and turn off the game. my blood was pumping pretty good, and didn't think I could muster the energy to play the SB that particular night. lol

just started playing on Pro. Plus, we're looking to buy a house / looking at houses etc...so my schedule is all jacked up for the time being.
