Teicher: Dorsey says Chiefs could draft Joeckel and re-sign Albert

Dorsey says Chiefs could draft Joeckel and re-sign Albert
By ADAM TEICHER
The Kansas City Star
General manager John Dorsey said Saturday the Chiefs might select Texas A&M’s Luke Joeckel with the first pick in the draft even if they re-sign Branden Albert, their incumbent left tackle. Dorsey said the Chiefs would draft the highest-rated player they have on their board regardless of his position.

“Then you have great competition at left tackle,’’ said Dorsey, speaking at the NFL Scouting Combine, of the combination of re-signing Albert and drafting Joeckel . “Who’s to say both of those guys are locked in to playing left tackle? Maybe one plays left guard, center, right guard, right tackle. You put your best five offensive linemen out there.

“There are so many options out there right now. Anything is possible.’’

Another interesting option for the Chiefs is Georgia linebacker Jarvis Jones, who had 28 sacks over the past two seasons. The Chiefs already have Pro Bowlers at outside linebacker in Tamba Hali and Justin Houston.

“They’re both pretty good players,’’ Dorsey said of the incumbents. “But who’s to say you couldn’t acquire another outside linebacker and what you could do is begin to rotate them. What you do is you make that unit better because they’re all fresher. They’re not on the field pounding all the time. That’s the thing about building quality depth. You can make your guys fresher in the fourth quarter.’’

No offense, but I don't understand what's wrong with all you guys tonight.

My argument with Hootie was if it was between a defensive lineman and a CB at 1, I'd take the defensive lineman, provided he provided pass-rush ability.

I stand by that statement.

I do not advocate taking either position to be quite honest. But if those are my two choices, I would rather add a third pass rusher over a CB.

I have no idea why this is typed like a Hootie post.

I mean, depending on what we do about Dorsey and Jackson you could say we have a definite need at DL...amazingly enough after all of the picks we've ****ing invested in that crew...but come the **** on. We'd have to be the dumbest ****ing franchise ever to spend our three top 5 picks and even our other top ten pick way back when (Sims) on shitty ****ing DL.

I think that Patterson WR has bust written all over him so I don't want any part of him but if we have to reach to take Tavon Austin if he pwns the combine at #1 then so be it...

much rather have Austin who may be the next Percy Harvin then draft another god damn DL with our #1 pick.

I don't know, I'm just telling you what everyone is projecting him as. You'll have to refer to Sorter on that as I'm not extremely skilled in those spots.

ok

when I say DL, I am talking about 5 techs and NT

I'm not talking about an Aldon Smith. If the QB's truly don't excite Reid and Dorsey so much that we have to take an Aldon Smith then I'd sure as hell be a lot happier with that than I would be with Luke Joeckel or Star Louioerieaututaita.

I disagree entirely.

He'll never be an elite run stopper playing the 4/5 tech but that's irrelevant with the way the NFL is changing. "Nickel" fronts aren't 1-down fronts anymore, they're typically 2 down. A run stopping ILB is a 1-down player nowadays whereas an ILB who can cover is 2 down player at minimum and depending on the team playing/gameplan, probably 3.

Richardson is great at getting upfield from the 3 tech, which given the way the NFL is, that's where he'll not only get a majority of his snaps but also where he'll be expected to produce the most.

OK, in a vacuum I would agree. I'm taking a pass rusher over a CB We're philosophically aligned.

But I don't think a player like Watt is in this draft. He sure as hell isn't Sheldon Richardson, I know that much.

They're pass rushers in a 4-3 under. Whether or not a guy rushes the passer is THE key point. There is no other point than that.

Aldon Smith and Terrell Suggs are NOT LINEMEN. They're 3-4 defensive ends. They're not 3 techniques or 5-techniques. They are pure pass rushers and that's all they do.

I think you're going to see 5-techs evolve more into 3-tech guys who aren't as good in the run game but are great at creating pressure/getting upfield from the 5 and 3 tech.

Exactly.

In a perfect world, sure you'd take a pass rushing DE over a corner.

This isn't a perfect world, this is the 2013 ****ing draft.

In our defense a 3rd pass rusher is a LINEBACKER.

And it's us that are being dense.

without using names but positions only, I'd like to see us draft like this:

1. QB
2. DB/WR/TE
3. DB/WR/TE
3. DB/WR/TE
4. DB/WR/TE
5. BPA
6. BPA
7. BPA

We do absolutely need guys who can rush the passer from the 3 and the 5 tech, especially if we are going 1 gap.

But, I'm just tired of putting all these positions above the QB spot when it comes to drafting. For once, I'd like to be pro active in the search for the QB instead of taking whats left over.
