Talib: Facemask was intentional

http://nesn.com/2016/02/aqib-talib-c...-foul-was-b-s/

Aqib Talib Committed Facemask ‘On Purpose’; First Personal Foul ‘Was B.S.’
by Doug Kyed

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — There was no one more ecstatic in the post-Super Bowl 50 press conference room than the always entertaining and sometimes volatile Aqib Talib.

The Broncos cornerback marched up to his podium with his three children and let out an enthused, “Yoooooo” after Denver beat the Carolina Panthers 24-10 for his first championship ring.

The night didn’t start out too positively for Talib, who was charged with two personal fouls in the first 20 minutes of action.

“It was all good,” Talib assured. “It was B.S. flags. One was on our sidelines — the guy was talking on our sideline. One I just did on purpose, and I just had to show him. It’s probably going to be a fine, but hey, we’re world champs.”

Talib’s first personal foul came when he was called for taunting after pushing Panthers wideout Corey Brown out of bounds following a Broncos sack.

“We were just talking, and it was getting a little chippy, so the ref picked me to slow the game down,” Talib said. “We didn’t do anything. We were just talking noise to each other, me and (Brown), a regular conversation.”

The second was thrown when he yanked Brown out of bounds by the receiver’s facemask to prevent a touchdown. Talib downplayed the impact of the foul.

“My teammates knew what it was,” Talib said. “He was on the 3-yard line. (With) a personal foul, he was on the 1 1/2-yard line, so it is what it is.”

The Panthers scored their only touchdown on the ensuing play, when running back Jonathan Stewart leaped over the line for the score.

“That was the most fun game I’ve played in by far,” Talib said. “I had about four or five catches on me, and I still think that was the most fun I’ve had in a game in my life.”

By the looks and sounds of it, Talib also had plenty of fun after the game, too.

As I've been saying for years, the Chiefs need to commit to being better dancers. Perhaps create a department for it.

It's a smart football decision at the time.

Until someone gets seriously injured and you have to live with that...

Denver rookie QB John Elway, on Jack Lambert, after Lambert and the Steelers knocked Elway out of his first game as a pro (1983).

The NFL's 2015/16 "Safety" manual appear to be limited only to concussions and the application thereof. Snapped necks might make a comeback in future years.

Perhaps the best way for the NFL to deal with this is to let the players deal with it. Cheap shots will earn an equal and opposite reaction. Even if the coach takes the player out of the game, or the game ends, the two teams will meet again, and perhaps somebody else gets to take the lumps.

It becomes sort of self-governing.

I know, I know... It's 2016, only hockey still has decent fights.

I do often wish there were some sort of equivalent to hockey fights in football. You want to take a cheap shot at our QB? Well, fine, but you're about to get your ass handed to you.

Or you could let the fans handle it.

Well, the Donks do host the Panthers next year, let's hope he's not on the bench then.

Home Kansas City, Oakland, San Diego, Houston, Indianapolis, Atlanta, Carolina, New England
Away Kansas City, Oakland, San Diego, Jacksonville, Tennessee, New Orleans, Tampa Bay, Cincinnati

Meh, who am I fooling, the NFL will issue many warnings before the game, and they won't take the shot at him that he's more than earned.

Screw bench time, he needs to have the living crap knocked out of him (at least once), and take it like a man and shove the yellow hanky back in the officials panties and tell him that he deserved that one..

Aqib Talib is going to see his playoff share check reduced by $31,831.

Which is OK because he didn’t lose $531,250 for serving a one-game suspension.

The NFL fined Talib $17,363 for his facemask penalty on Carolina receiver Corey “Philly” Brown near the goal line in the Broncos’ 24-10 win in Super Bowl 50.

Talib was also fined $8,681 for taunting Brown in a separate incident and $5,787 for an equipment violation (he did not wear knee pads with the end of his pant leg above the knee).

It had been suggested Talib’s admission to purposely grabbing Brown’s facemask might have been worthy of a suspension, but the league’s discipline announcement only mentioned fines, not a suspension. Talib will be paid $8.5 million in salary next year, or $500,000 per game. He also gets a 46-man game-day roster bonus of $31,250 per game.

Broncos’ defensive end Malik Jackson was also fined $8,861 for his unnecessary roughness penalty in the Super Bowl.

In the Broncos’ victorious locker room, Talib was philosophical about his payroll share check, which was supposed to be $173,000 gross, getting docked, saying winning the Super Bowl should be worth a “couple million’’ to his brand.

Doesn't look like Talib will be getting a suspension.

Which just shows all the talk about player safety is CYA rather than a real concern.

Yep. If you have a big contract you can do whatever you want on the field. The fines are a pittance, so if you're Malik Jackson or Aqib Talib or Von Miller, go ahead and continue your late hits, face masks, and personal fouls. The league doesn't care as long as you don't hurt one of their big stars.

He's a perfect Bronco. It used to be the Raiders that acted that way. He's a piece of shit. If he was offed in a drive by the world would be a better place.
