I think there's a 95% chance the penalties will be substantially reduced, which were completely unprecedented.

Furthermore, why did the league wait a full year to announce this harsh penalty, given that it occurred in February/March of 2015?

I have the answer: Because Goodell and Vincent want to make the AFC West more "competitive" by taking away a high draft choice from the Chiefs, who look to run away with the AFC West Crown (and most likely, the AFC Championship).

****ing NFL.

They absolutely did.

They gave Terrell Davis and John Elway minimal signing bonuses "on the books" and salaries that were way low for 98 and 99. ..then paid them 29m a few years later (once the league stepped in and forced them to pay) and called the difference between what was owed and what was reported to the league "interest" and said that Pat Bowlen couldn't afford to pay them at the time because he had just spent all his money on building a new stadium.

They got stripped of a third round pick twice...the first was a couple years after and then again a couple years after that for hiding that "interest" from the league.

They paid Davis and Elway "under the table".

I'll try to find the Washington post article showing the 29m they were actually paid.

For 1998-1999 John Elway AND Terrell Davis had COMBINED base salaries of barely over 2m for BOTH YEARS COMBINED.

Their signing bonuses were a combined 15.5m...but Denver actually paid them 29m...and didn't "disclose" that to the league...when the league found out, Denver called the difference "interest".

But, nah....that's not cheating at all.

There's the Washington post article where they bring up the 29m.

But...but...but...Pat Bowlin himself said it DID NOT GIVE THE BRONCOS ANY ADVANTAGE! So it can't be true...He probably cant remember saying that now though...

The Chiefs didn't even gain a competitive advantage in that game. We didn't even need Maclin.

The Chiefs would have won that game without Maclin. Hell they scored more points than Houston did in the first play of the game

I heard in the car, I think it was chicks filling in on Rusillo and Kannell, anyway, they brought up the fact that they released it on the first day of FA so the "boring" story would get burried in the headlines. They postulated that they wanted to show everyone who's boss.

I dont know about all that but the timing makes sense.
